Found this looking on YouTube. Even though I own Fords I'm not a fan of Ford or their sorted history.
All car brands have their virtues and their design flaws. I've had my Maverick for 41 years but that doesn't make me a "Ford Guy". I like cars from all of the major American manufacturers (and some foreign manufacturers), but it depends on the year and model. They all made some nice cars, and they all made some turds...
It only lasted 7 years, so what? (actually 8) Most models become stale to buying public, sales decline. In case no one remembers, for mfgrs it all about selling cars. Yeah Ford could have hung "Maverick" on the new Fairmont, but it was time for a change, Pinto got the boot as well. Chevy dropped Nova, Monza and ahem Vega. Models like Pontiac's Phoenix were only around a few years.
I'm a Ford guy but nowadays my daily driver is a Chrysler 300C and I also have a Dodge truck. About the only cars I get tired of seeing or hearing about are Camaros and Chevelles...
I like Mustangs, Camaros & Chevelles, but once you've seen 500 of them, you've seen 'em all. They're at every car show, and that's fine, but seeing other makes & models makes for a better experience...
You left out a few zeroes. I rather check out a 64 Dodge Dart at a show than looking at another 55-57 Chevrolet or 1st get Camaro.
And every 1st gen Camaro is a Z28, every Chevelle is an SS. There's now 10 times more Z28's and SS Chevelles than GM ever built.
I would like to have seen what a Boss version Maverick or an Eliminator Comet would have looked like from Ford. Early Grabbers had great looks IMO, just needed more performance to match. I think a factory 300-horse, 4-speed and 3.50 - 4.11 option gears would have been a hit.
Absolutely, but the Maverick/Comet was supposed to be a low-budget car, and Ford didn't want it to upstage the Mustang...
Yeah, it seems to me that once the Pinto came out in '71, Ford could have made the Maverick a true Ponycar...
Here we go with the upstage Mustang B/S. Ford knew exactly what they were doing, Maverick was built to be "sporty looking" transportation. Came close to matching the original Mustang 1st year sales. By '71 Boss 302 was in the history books.
It's an absolute fact that Ford didn't want the Maverick to upstage the Mustang (why would they?), regardless of what engines were produced. Yes, they knew what they were doing. Maverick/Comet were low-budget cars while the Mustang/Cougar were more expensive, luxury sport cars. The Maverick replaced the Falcon which was also a low-budget car.
