Went to a nice show today in Horicon. What perfect fall weather - sunny and low 70's! This show was part of a local Harvest Festival and they even had a full breakfast in the morning. A nice way to help raise money for the car club and charities it supports. There were about 100 cars there. I was a bit worried about my class size, as it covered 1960-1972 stock. Lots of nice cars in that year range. Also, the classes were a participant vote, which can sometimes be a bit tough with a big Chevy crowd. Well, I should not have been worried, as I ended up winning my class ........... After going to get my trophy, a friend who was also in my class but did not win with his 1963 Nova, came up and said he thought I may be in the running for the big award, "Best of Show". I asked him how come, and he said that he saw the show organizers come back over and look at my car 2 times while I was over at the food tent getting a burger. When they got down to the very last trophy for Best of Show, I was very surprised to hear "1970 Ford Maverick Grabber" announced..... :bananaman It was great to represent the Maverick world against all those very worthy Camaros, Corvettes, Hemi Mopars, ect. There sure were a lot of guys that came up to me afterwords to tell me what a worthy car I have. I just always smile at the lowly little Maverick no one cared about for so many years now being considered a competitor to the high end show cars.
Thanks guys. I took the last picture when it was starting to get dark out. The automatic settings on the camera really changed the color of my car to a green! Here is a picture from last weeks show for guys that have never seen my car before - the color is Champagne Gold Metallic
Congrats!!!!!!!! Best of shows for that catagory in those years are hard to come by just because of the competition and number of cars in that age group. I have shown since I was 17 and I am 40 now. I love going to shows, not because of the trophies, but because of the common bond you have with the people there and the friends you make during the day that last a life time. I can not wait to get the one for my dad done so I can take it out with him.
Two things: 1. Pretty darn cool for a 6 cyl car to win best of show! 2. My brother's car is also Champaign Gold. It also looks green in some pictures.
Thanks again guys. Yes, it is interesting with the bone stock 6 cylinder, just how many people are fasinated with it. They marvel at how simple it all looks and how easy it is to work on. Many are younger guys that have only had cars where the entire area under the hood is all engine and no room. This was my 2nd best of show win with this car. I was at a show in Montello in August. About the same size, 100 cars or so, but a much different judging format. The Montello show was concourse judging by 3 judges using a 150 point system. The 1st judge (I was told he was a local garage mechanic) did nothing but look at and judge the engine. The 2nd looked only at the interior and the 3rd only the body, paint and chrome trim. This is by far the fairest way I have ever seen car show judging, as the same guys looked at the same things on all cars. At the end of the day, the Maverick scored higher than all the other cars and trucks and earned the Best of Show.
