Sometimes the truth hurts and the article is factual. We are the ones that are making them a comeback car, its the forgotten cars that are getting all the attention these days anything and everything that can be done to the cookie cutter cars can be ordered out of a catalog from frame to completion

I feel that sometimes these automotive journalists do little more than re-word/re-phrase what someone else wrote and pile on. No mention of the renaissance the cars are currently experiencing. Not a word about the growing aftermarket support.

As you correctly point out, we cannot buy a Maverick unibody yet, but it is way, way better than the battle I have getting parts for my 1986 Thunderbird and it is over a decade newer! I'd give my left stone to be able to buy weather stripping or any reproduction parts for a car that in the early 80's, introduced the aero revolution and produced championships on the race track.

I hope the journalist is blessed with an SVT Contour with a intermittent electric problem.

One little blurb does not a hate article make...At least the writer said it was good looking...As for build quality. All the manufacturers were doing it very badly in the early/mid 70's. I agree these cars don't get very good press more often than not. Perhaps someone should do an article on the Mav/Comets storied drag racing history in the early 70's ... Dyno Don, Fast Eddy Schartman Etc... It could help the resurgence in popularity. Truth be told I have only really experienced (Personally) 3 occasions where my personal mavs have been looked down upon at shows' cruises. All 3 times the individuals were put in their place too... Otherwise I have only heard good things from those I have encountered over the years. Being different defies the social norm, this will always bring haters fearing change. Don't let em bother you. Marching to a different drum beat will always garner a few dubious looks from the un-anointed/sheeple. Laugh at them, pity them for their lack of vision/creativity what ever just don't let em get to you man!!!
    Peace out!!! :victory:

Well, quite a bit more than "2%" have survived. All those cars were POSs except for the Maverick and LTD.

I thought 2% was pretty low to until I did the math. On a million cars that would mean 20,000 remain. That would be an average of 400 per state. I don't know about you but there may not be 400 in my state of VA!

Don't forget a sizable quantity were for Canadian useage...

There are probably enough derelicts and parts cars to make the 2%, maybe even a little more but I doubt even ½% are licensed/drivable... When Brian(Murphy's Automotive) was buying/selling these cars, most came from out of state(had five or six at one time)... His Boss 351 came from MI & my Comet MS...

While I seldom see a Comet or Maverick, think about my Cobra Jet... The 1969 Fastback Cobra was a one year only body style, approx 10349 were built(Marti will tell you 11099, but 750+ of those were Talladegas)... Most were raced/wrecked/beaten to death, plus many of the remaining were raped of their 428 engines for a Mustang... I haven't seen another one on the road in years...

My friend has 3 of the '69 Fairlane Cobras, two fastbacks and one notchback. They are all complete cars that need to be restored, but they have their original drivetrains.

One of the fastbacks is red and he took the car apart and had it stripped down to bare metal and had his friend who restores cars put a high quality paint job on it. He got the car back and put the body back together and it has set in one of his garages for at least 10 years. I guess he will finish it one of these days.

my friend with the 35' Dodge truck... http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/not-bad.89616/page-2#post-972422 ...did this Camaro also. after the nuts and bolts restro he said he couldn't get his parts money out of the car much less his time, he's making a driver out of it. he has 4 linked the rear and installed a 5 speed. he has a 6.0 LS on the stand going in next.

I think Fords vision for the Maverick was purely a competitively priced transportation car, and nothing more than that. The fact that the car endures today in so many forms is a testimony its roots, its style, and the true appeal it has. How many Plymouth Valiants do you see? Comparing a car that never left the factory with a four speed to a Nova is fair and unfair at the same time.....Blame Ford for that, not the Maverick.

Exactly this... Maverick was compared with VW when first introduced...

When Ford finally caved in and offered a V8 I dunno why they didn't also offer a 4-speed... A 4-bbl would have been nice as well but read on, you'll find out why it wasn't going to happen... In '71 performance was waning, frugality was in, insurance rates were through the roof for performance models... Was last year of big block Mustangs(production now only a fraction of a couple years prior) and Torino Cobra that base engine slipped to 351, 429 was now optional... For '72 Cobra was in the history books... No Double Stangs ever had a 4-bbl option(no v8 period in '74), Fox chassis not till '83... The mid '70s & early '80s were dark days for performance(Mustang's only V8 for '80 & '81 was the 255, was serious rejoicing when the '82 GT got the 302 again)... With Stang-II not given a 4-bbl option, isn't reasonable Maverick would have one... Can also be noted that only 302 to date with 4bbl were the 1968 models... Even then wasn't available in anything but Cougar, Cyclone & Stang, not available in any other Ford or Mercury models..

I know someone who ordered a new '71 Grabber the first day they became available with the v8 option... He'd heard they were coming and been pestering dealer who kept telling him "not yet, not yet"... Finally his salesman called him at work and he ordered it that same evening before going home...
