Okay, look in the picture for the plain red one. It looks like it had rocker panel molding and two small white pinstripes running down the top body line. That would be my car.... Now, I know this story would be better if it was still bone stock, but it is not. I bought the car 4 years ago as a rolling chassis for my super gas project. Don't panic, it is cut some, but nicely done and will still look just like a Maverick when done. It was already backhalfed when I bought it. The history was just an added bonus. I noticed the low VIN when I bought it, but hadn't started really digging into it until recently. It had sat since 1985 and is a clean body with all original paint, chrome, glass, sheet metal, etc. It is just the insides that are to be altered, Thanks for everyone's help, I truly enjoy finding out all of this info.
Exactly where on the body is the buck tag located on a Maverick or Comet? All in same location, or different by manufacturing plant?
All of the St. Thomas, Canada built cars (X VIN code) I have seen have them screwed to the passenger side of the radiator support just in front of the battery. All of the Wayne, Michigan built cars I have seen (W VIN code) have them on the drivers side down by the frame rail. I have never seen a Kansas City built built car (K VIN code) with a buck tag. This is just what I have observed with my cars and with others I have came across in junkyards. Here are a couple of pics of my cars. The first is my '69.5 Canada built car. You can see it is on the passenger side. The other is my '74 Grabber, it's kind of hard to see the buck tag so I put a box around it. The one on my Grabber is attached with some kind of staple or something? I too, am very intrested in the history of that 100009 car. Keep us updated on that! Too bad that the body has been altered, but at least the car is still around at all.
I would do a title search on that car in the state of michigan and see who all has owned it. I would also send all the info you know to Mustang & Fords magazine for their "Rare Finds" column.
