Sorry, but they are definitely Classics. And they can be "made" into musclecars, although not authentic as such...

I do consider them to be a classic car. Even though I have made modifications to my factory 302. I love the fact that it's over 30 years old, sounds great, & goes like hell... It will still be considered an Orphan. I just love the fact that these cars turn heads, & everyone has a wonderful story about them. When you want to stand out in a crowd, get yourself a Maverick or a Comet. Then watch for, the thumbs-up!!!!

    Respect

In 1974 when my Maverick Grabber was new, any Maverick with a 302 was said to be a fast car. It may not have been a "muscle" car but it made many people nervous. We would cruise Telegraph and gather at the different parking lots to talk about our cars. We all open our hoods, when they saw that V8 in my Maverick, I got respect and still do. Many 351 Mustangs, 350, 307 Cameros, 302,351 Torino's LOST to my Maverick. These were some of the best times with my car.

Yeah, and when's the last time a street-driven Chevette turned any heads?...

As we get older we all become classics. At least that's better than the alternative :biglaugh: .

I consider my Maverick Grabber a classic. It wasn't a muscle car. Even Ford admitted to that in a 1970 ad, "It's not a superbomb, it's more of a jazzy firecracker." However, it has the looks of a muscle car, and can be souped up to match. BTW that ad uses the term "muscle car," so that term was in use in 1970.

As Mavericks become more collectible, and more restorable, they will definitely be considered Classics, even if the Classic Car Club of America is too snooty to accept them.

I don't think that they are too snooty as much as there are a lot of 25 year old and older cars out there. These are guys that saved and restored Deusenbergs, so you can forgive them for not getting all dewey eyed over Mavericks.

As to 302 Mavericks being fast cars in stock form? I've owned a lot of Mustangs, some with 351s, and without a doubt, every 351 Mustang would absolutely mop up on my stock 302-2v Maverick.

And if you modify a Mustang by swapping in a 351 in place of a six, and do the same to the maverick, more people will look at the Mustang as a muscle car because they came from the factory that way. It's not a conspiracy.

    Let's not label these cars...

as classics or musclecars. If we do then some idiot will want to pay $30,000 for one and there will go our hobby!

Yeah, it's a "catch 22". We hate that our cars haven't gotten the recognition they deserve, and yet at the same time, they're a bit of a nicely kept secret. The prices have definitely gone up, but that's true with most things. They'd be even harder for the average enthusiast to find and obtain if suddenly everybody wanted one and the prices went through the roof...

I showed off my 1973 Maverick Grabber to my brother-in-law. When I told him how much I paid for it, he was surprised. He said, "I thought a classic car like this would cost three for four times that." So we better stop calling them classics.

    Not Fast

Well my stock 302 2V was not fast but, I would pick on '71-'73 Mach 1s with 302s, (they had single exhaust). They were not fast, neather was the 351 2V Mach 1 and Torino GT! I could easily take them from a 30mph roll. I could even give a Mach 1 with a 351C 4V a bad day and make his sweat a little from a 30 roll. The Maverick Grabber I have now has a 310HP 302 and the funny thing is, I don't jump on it like I use to but, it nice to know its there!

Yeah, the 71-73 302 2v Mustang were definitely not muscle cars. They weighed a LOT more than Mavericks too. The Boss 351 Mustangs of the same era were among the fastest muscle cars ever produced.

Also, quite often stoplight drags don't tell the whole story, as it is a partial quarter mile. Your gearing could get you wins over cars that may be faster in the quarter. I have had cars that were damn fast 30-60, but not that fast over a quarter.

The 71-73s were damn heavy cars. The 69 Machs with a 351-4v windsor, automatic and 3.25 gears ran 15 flat in the quarter, per the magazines of the day. I imagine the first V8 Mavs were in the mid 16s off the showroom floor.
