Longest rebuild ever… finally getting it back in. Shooting to have her running again before the 50th birthday mid April. Wish me luck!

Was almost at finish line. Converter wasn’t fully seating into transmission, so I pulled it out to try fresh… the input shaft came out and is stuck in converter. I have not used any heavy force , just a lot of pushing and jiggling when trying to seat it. Has this happened to anyone?

Almost there but I had the wrong flex plate!! Before I put engine back in, does everyone run stock engine mounts or is there an upgrade to poly?

I don't believe you are going to like that 2,500-stall convertor with that big cam. The cam's operating range is 2,800 to 6,800 rpm. The engine will not perform up to its potential. I think I also read you still have the stock gears. That would make matters worse.

A 3,500-stall convertor w0uld be far better. Just my experience.

HotRock... THANK YOU. I called up Hughes Transmission after reading your post. I am going to pay a restocking fee and difference between 2,500 and a 3,000 or 3,500 converter. Such great customer service there for a trans I had them rebuild years ago! Luckily had wrong flex plate or she would be back in car! Might a few days delayed now, but better to fix this now than later. Thanks again

You are welcome. Purchase the 3,500-stall convertor, very streetable; you won't regret it.

Called and spoke to Hughes this morning. Given the current gearing they're recommending to stay with the 2,500 converter. This is just a weekend car for around the town, no strip or highway stuff... my build just got out of hand a bit. Right now, after sitting the garage for so long, I just want to drive her again. I know I need to get get some 3:55 gears, RPM Air Gap and a Holly 700 but I am going to wait and enjoy the car for some time.

I appreciate this forum so much! My dad bought this car new in Riverside, CA from Boyer Motors back in 72 and I didn't start working on it until 2009 and got it running then.... started with just the fuel and ignition system, not knowing anything about cars...then it just snowballed into what we have below.

Thank guys! T-minus 18 days or so to get her running before the 50th birthday!

    Wish me luck!
