yeah they may last longer on a 302 where the back bearing of the alt isnt up against the head, i might fix one and try it... on the 390 though i need something smaller. LOL beer money.. hehe
so got to Bryant's shop today (that's how most of my stories start or end) and he ordered me a remanufactured 3G alt ProAmp brand for $110. I removed my old one and once I took it to his shop he spotted the problem right away, the black wire going to the battery terminal on the solenoid was snapped in half so I was getting nothing from the alternator (I told Bryant that it must have happened on my to his shop because if that had happened I would defintely spotted the problems with my acute sixth sense and my eagle eye, nothing gets past me). So here are the pics:
we looked around and couldn't find the harness that goes on the back of the alternator, anyone know a place to go get it from? or a part number?
I got it done!! So the alternator was sitting around as I was waiting for the harness. The harness arrived from rockauto. I went to go install the alternator as Bryant described (very similar to the way that 3G alternator diagram that's floating around). The only problem was the alternator bracket which probably was from my old 6cyl wasn't allowing me to adjust the alt properly. Bryant sanded down the surface for me that touched the alt body and it slipped right in, no problem. I was able to adjust it. The only thing I had to do was the decrease the size of the space on the top of the alt because it was sticking out too much and making the belt off center. The battery now reads 14+ and with the electric fan and AC turned on I have no problems, the car doesn't shut off anymore.
The 3G alternator I had Bryant order for me, maybe he know the part number. The harness was part number PT1901 I used a few ring connectors, stator connectors and one new 4 gauge wire to go from the alternator B+ post to the battery post on the starter solenoid. thats it
Nice work. I run a remanufactured Chevy alternator on mine because I'm cheap, but the 3G is really the only way to go.
