Hey guys, here are some photos of the 77 Mav I bought. I want to get wider wheels. Nothing like drag wheels, but something that is meatier and fills the space better ( I do love the white stripe though!). Any ideas?
There are seemingly endless choices in style, size, and backspacing. 14" wheels are getting more difficult/expensive to find sporty tires for. The backspacing built into the rim is critical to get in the proper range so nothing rubs on the body or the suspension. As far as what you would like to see on your car.....look at wheels on peoples cars and decide what you like. Do a lot of research, and figure out how much you want to spend. check out the "garage" in this forum, as some people list tire and wheel information as part of their garage. My rims are 14x7 with 3.5" backspacing (I wanted this style and didnt realize the challenge to get 14" tires). Also, make sure the bolt pattern is correct. Many people use 15" rims and larger to get more tire choices.
Here's a topic I posted. Maybe it will help? http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/rims.118041/#post-1134456
This is the information I collected of what people are running on theirs. Maverick/Comet wheel/tire combo’s FRONT 14x7 w/ 225/60-14s 15x5 w/ 195/65-15s 15x7 w/ 225/60-15s 16x7 w/ 245/45-16s 3-1/2 or 4 inch backspacing Front 17x7 w/ 245-40/17s 4 inch backspacing. REAR 14x8 w/ 235/60-14s 15x8 w/ 245/60-15s 15x8 w/ 255/60-15s or G-60/15s 15x8 w/ J-60/15s (M&H racemasters) 16x8 w/ 255/50-16 3-1/2 or 4 inch backspacing 18x8 w/ 275/35-18 4 inch backspacing
Old picture, fronts 15x7 3.75” backspace tires are 215/60/15, rears 15x8 4.00” backspace tires 265/50/15. The rears would fill out an unrolled/pulled quarter pretty well
These posts are helpful, I just wished the tracking was more complete, or maybe confirmation that there was a safe size combo for each rim size front and back, like how do I know if 15x7 w/ 225/60-15s, 4" BS works for all four wheels? I found many posts of how big can I go instead of what is a size that will likely work...
For awhile I had factory Magnum 500's all way around. They were 15x7 4.25" bs with 225/60-15. Never had an issue. Now the fronts are 15 x 7 4"bs with 235/60-15. The backs are slightly larger diameter with 255/60-15. I would think that 15x7 w/ 225/60-15s, 4" BS all way around should give you no problems.
So not to hijack this thread but I know there is some annoyance over so many threads asking essentially the same question... I have a lead on a set of four 15" x 7" American Racing rims (centerline / outlaw style) in 5 x 4.5" bolt center, ET -6 (4" back spacing) with Goodyear Assurance 215/65R15 mounted. I don't think there's any issues with the backspacing from all the post searches I've performed but the I have had little luck with regards to the aspect ratio of 65R - is this getting too tall? (everyone on here seems to prefer 60R) The purchase only makes sense if the tires can be used.
https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc Put in the info of the tires you have on the car and the info of the tires your looking at and go from there.
The 215 65 would probably be a good height. That was the size tire out 92 Camaro RS had and they weren't a tall tire, probably comparable to a 235 60. Edit....used the calculator above and the 215 is the same height as a 235 60.
