    Hello all,
I've been lurking around this forum for a month or so and finally decided to join up so I could ask a few questions and gain some knowledge. Quick backstory, I acquired my car from a neighbor who was moving . His wife of 30 plus years had passed away and he was downsizing. He told us that he was getting rid of everything in the house, a house he has lived in for 28 years. My girlfriend told me he had an old muscle car in the garage and she thought it was a Camero or a Chevelle. Now, I've lived with my girlfriend for three years and I've never seen a muscle car in his driveway. I never saw the wife, I almost never saw him and this was the first time I've ever spoke with him. But my girlfriend was right, he had an old car of some kind, I could see it in the garage under a tarp.

My girlfriend asks him " are you keeping the car"?
" No" he says "everything has to go"
Now I still don't know what the car is but if it's cheap enough I'll make him an offer. So I ask him "how much" and he replies, " two thousand bucks"
I immediately say SOLD! and shake his hand, still not knowing what kind of car it was.
Well as it turns out it is a 1971 comet GT. What a stroke of luck to be in the right place at the right time. I fell head over heals with it immediately. Flat black, rough around the edges, the car almost looked weaponized to me. A new obsession was born and I couldn't be happier.

And like any noob I have a few questions but first I will add a few pictures so I can keep your attention.

I guess my first question would be about tires and rims. If I upgrade or change to a 15" rim how wide can I go without running the risk of rubbing. I currently have 14's but I am finding that there aren't a lot of tire choices on those, it's either Cooper cobras or BFG's .

Anyways happy to be here and thanks in advance for anyone who can help with my noobish questions

Looks like you got a good deal, the price Mavs and Comets cars are bringing now anything in that price range that is drivable is a good deal and being small bumper Comet GT just makes it that much better. Yeah flat black makes cars look sinister

Welcome to the site from northeast Ohio!!! :tiphat:

Frank left out that you need a 4-1/2 inch back spacing on those 8 inch rear wheels. You can check out tire and wheel combinations and their back spacing in the tire and wheel section of the Garage on this site.

Thanks everybody, happy to be here so much information to soak up. Got lost in Melvins classic Ford parts last night for at least 2 hours. I think I'm gonna stick with my stock 14" rims for now and replace my Coper cobras until I kick all the cobwebs out, no use spending money on new rims if there is a larger issue waiting to present itself down the road a bit.

255s will rub the leafsprings and upper frame rail with a 4-1/2" backspace. 4-inch is about ideal.

Welcome from Portland OR. I have had my car and been a member here for about 20 months. It is my first Comet/Ford since a brief ownership of a thrashed 68 cougar in 1979. You have a wonderful car to start with.....and those current wheels are cool btw. So, even now, I am still a noob.....maybe noob deluxe. Welcome!
