I am replacing my stock C4 trans with a Hughes Street and Strip Transmission. While the engine is out, I would also like to upgrade it a little. Looking to get in the 350-400 hp range.

Currently I am running Doug Thorley shorty headers, an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb and intake. Petronix distrub and coil, Champion 3 core radiator, Edelbrock performer water pump and power master alt.

With this setup learning towards some Edelbrock RPM heads or some ARFs...

    Thinking Extreme Energy Comp Cam

Anyone have close to this setup or advice.... other things to consider? Still learning as I go. Doing all the work myself.

    Thanks

    A little huh?

With the original asthmatic heads, the stock 302 even with 4bbl & headers will be lucky to produce 185 Hp. At 350 Hp, a 302 will be rather rumpy and require a 3000 or so stall converter and probably at least 3.50 rear gear.

Was not planning on stroking it unless I needed to in order to get into 350-400 hp range. Not opposed to it... just thought the AFRs would do the trick.

How much do you think the AFRs and new cam would add?

Assuming a free flowing exhaust system, either AFR 165 or 195 and a cam in range of 220-230* will put out 300+ HP. The 195 are somewhat overkill on a 302.

Using a mild 410 cu in Windsor, Engine Masters produced 471 Hp with the 165 and only made 13 additional with the 195. They were sure the 165 would strangle the big motor.

I have a Blue Print 415 Hp 347 earmarked for my Fairlane, going to swap cam for a Extreme energy with a little less duration so it will be more street friendly.

Check out my 302 AFR combination in the Garage section of this site. Another member of this site that has the identical 302 combination as mine (except he has a little less carburetor and camshaft) produced a dyno-tested 360 horsepower at the flywheel.

As Krazy Comet states, a higher stall torque convertor is a must. I run a 3500 stall unit. Very streetable.

that motor has a roller cam and 28oz. imbalance. Do they build a roller block with 28 imbalance guts? That negates the need for balancer/flexplate change.

Gt40 heads and a comp 270 cam with a stealth intake is a really nice combo. With an Edelbrock 650 carb. Use thin Cometic head gaskets.
