Just a little bit about my maverick, I have a 1970 Maverick that is strictly for the drag strip! It was my dads, and now he has passed it down to me (Best gift ever). Anyway since I could I remember we have always ran a 302w in our hot rod, and the biggest reason was because of the limited space in engine bay!! I am learning as I go, and will admit I am not an engine guru or anything about working on the car that's my dads duties lol. But I am doing as much as I can to learn everything I can to be able to find the best setup for my car! Ok now here is my question, we are going to swap out the 302w and drop a 351w! As everyone knows mavericks are limited with space so we are going to cut or trim down shock towers, any measurements or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

You didn't indicate what your goals are for the car? That has a big impact on what advice to give.

As for me, I would cut back the towers since the engine will be out and install a 331ci, 347ci or 363ci stroker. A lot less hassle with headers than the 351W install. That is unless you are planning on building a 351W big cube stroker.

Really the goal is to able to run 10.90 in 1/4. That's one of our goals. We just assumed more cubic inch the better. But budget does play a factor. So basically what is the best bang for our buck. Like I said I am new to all the under the hood stuff I was young and dumb and didn't pay attention to my dad I just drove lol. But I am on here to really learn all I can. So don't be afraid to school me on anything, I am open to all info!
    Thanks for response

What does the car run now??? ET/MPH wise...What is the current setup?? Telling us this will allow for better/not redundant suggestions...

You might consider coming to Dayton MCCI Roundup this weekend; there will be lots of cars there w/ most likely all the under-hood/engine combo setups for these cars. Since your in Ohio, might be worth your effort.

Ok here is what I know, now this engine is no longer able to be used so we are starting from scratch with about 7,000 budget. We were running 11.50's 116mph with a 302 bored 60 over, with world heads 58cc heads. Had a 289 torker, 600 lift cam, 202;195 valves running 5:13 gears. 9 inch rear end, mini tubbed and car weight is 2675 with driver. Please bear with me like I said this stuff is like a new language to me but learning as I go!
    Thanks

Technically, there is no such thing as a "302w". They were all made in Cleveland.

When looking at plant production this is true, there are 289 Windsors though... The first year of operation for the Windsor plant was '68 and for whatever reason they built 289(in 302 blocks)... For '69 they switched to 351, at that point there was no referring to 351 as Windsors, the Cleveland foundry was yet to produce its first 351C...

Often people just refer to the standard 302 as a Windsor just to differentiate it from a Boss 302 that had Cleveland heads.
