hey all, so i ended up getting a new power steering pump for my 250 77 mav off of rock auto. and of course, i always get my parts by searching 1977 maverick 250. seems like it will do the trick, but the dipstick/filler neck is not the same at all on the new pump. it’s much beefier with a bigger hole. problem is, it didn’t come with a cap. anyone know where to get this cap/dipstick? second question, if the cap doesn’t have a dipstick, anyone have the oil capacity so i don’t overfill? thanks so much guys
here is a pic of the pump and then a pic of just the neck opening… https://ibb.co/GsB89rP https://ibb.co/hCY50sq ‘77 neck just has a skinny dipstick and filler neck, like any other dipstick on the car. the new neck opening measures about 1 1/8 inches in diameter across. 1 1/2 if we’re counting the lip.
Fill to point internal pump housing is submerged in fluid, goud nuff. If you aren't sending the core back(or even if you are), the housings can be switched (Pre '74-ish cans do not swap as the outlet is moved approx ½"). Screw a long bolt into pump shaft, clamp in vice and use a 2''x 4''(alternating R & L) to drive housing from pump assembly. After removing the external nut on pressure port on back, it's easy to remove. Also there is a sealing gasket inside, be sure that stays in place if you swap. Also x2, pump connections changed from a flair type to "O" ring in mid '76, not interchangeable. BTW the steering system on my Comet orig came from a '77 Maverick, had large opening pump.
okay so just eyeball the fluid to where the pump is submerged. and removing the housing is well and good, i do have a vise, but are you saying put the bolt in the vise? and this bolt is screwed into the pulley shaft, correct?
Yes, thread bolt into pump shaft, clamp head in vise and let pump hang(something over 5" works well). Gently tap edge of canister using small hammer on wooden block. There are Youtube videos showing removal as well as install procedure.
Sweet. i will look up those vids. thanks i appreciate the knowledge. hopefully the new lines i bought are the same. they’re the o ring type (at least, they came with them)
