    I thought I was nuts for paying $128 for one last week, but it was for a 1970 which is different from the 1971 and later caps.

    I'm sorry, but that's just insane. Either the buyer was desperate for a NOS cap, has too much cash on his hands, or has a lot of friends helping him move the price up. For $178.00, that cap had better be cast in gold.
