yeah i wouldnt wait, they were supposed to bump it yearly yet it has only happened twice. bikerbuck, you can have a different motor with all required smog equip and still pass in nevada. my truck was not purchased stock with a high rise four barrel 390 with a k and N filter and tall cam and yet it was passing consistantly for the previous owner. here you could actually put a fuel injected 302 in a jeep and they will pass it based on the motor requirements, not fail it on the fact that it not the factory AMC 360 running a bad carb... sorry starting to rant:rant2: of course if you have too much truoble you could move south to minden by me and just forget it completely:thumbs2:

wow i'm glad i live in utah. out here if the car is pre 68 then no emmisions if its 83 or older it just has to pass emmisions you don't need the equipment installed. but 84 and newer the car has to have the equipment on it. that is only if you live in salt lake, utah, and davis countys. if you live in any other part of the state they don't have emmissions. so if you can't get a car to pass you just get a po box in another county and register it there. it's not too bad here.

cars in california that are pre 75 are smog exempt. done expect that to change. the reason they move if up to 75 is that that was the first year that catalitic conveters were used on all cars. pre cat. cars smog equipment really didnt do much to reduce the emissions effectively.

wow it's less then 20 bones up there. in salt lake county it costs me 70 to register my older cars now. when i first started driving the comet in 2004 it still cost me more. a whole 25 bones and it just keeps going up. and thats not counting the inspections and emmissions

Guys thanks for the welcomes and thanks for the info! I'll deffinately be looking into that '71 down in San Jose. I have a buddy who lives down there that knows cars pretty well, he is going to take a look at it. It would be nice to not have to worry about smog, so if it comes down too it and this one is a great car and the '76 is as well and I can get either or for the same price I'll be gettin the '71. Only thing about the '71 is I'll be Drum Brakes with Disk Breaks as I hear the drum breaks eat breaks alot.

Putting disk brakes on the car won't be hard or expensive at all. Check out the tech article below:

    http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=35957

Personally, if I were in your shoes I would go with the '71 over the '76 just to avoid the Smog BS. Then you can do any upgrades that you want to improve the driveability and enjoyment of the vehicle as time and money allows without having to worry if it'll be kicked off the road because some idiot with a poorly calibrated machine says it isn't the way they think it should be.

Spend some time going through the tech articles and you'll see just how much can be done inexpensively to these wonderful cars.
