On Maverick automatics and standards used a different starter ... did you use the same starter or buy a new one?

I used a different starter. I even went down to the mustang shop and the guy swapped the starters because it looked like the bendix, on the one I had, was sticking further out than the new one he gave.

So I get home and put it on, and it didn't even want to go in. I had to wiggle it to line the bolt holes up. Once I bolted it up, it still made the same loud buzzing noise when running. I'm not sure what to do now. I know fords don't use shims like chevys do. I'm totally lost right now. I think tomorrow I'm going to re-install the starter and take the dust shield off and find out what's going on.

Even at an idle you won't be able to see anything.
Have you tried the original starter?
If the replacement starters don't work then maybe the original starter will.
I remember something about the early Mustang using a 154 tooth gear????
You need to have the flywheel, Ring gear and the starter all match,
Did you order the starter for the year of the bellhousing? Did you order the ring gear to match the bellhousing?
was everything ordered to fit the 66 Mustang?
If you have mismatched parts you can bet that that is where your problem is.

Everything was ordered for a 66 mustang, or so I was told. The only thing I wasn't responsible for ordering was the torque converter with the ring gear on it. I mounted the starter back up and took the dust shield off and did not notice the bendix contacting the ring gear, so I know there's no clearance issue with that. I'm wondering if the teeth on the ring gear are a correct match for the starter I have. When I first try to start the engine, you can hear the bendix clanking like it's not engaging right or like it's not meshing with the ring gear properly. So now I have to wait until tomorrow to call the place where the torque converter was ordered and find out if I have the correct one.

What year C4 do you have?
If it is not a 65-66 then you can't order parts for that car it must be ordered for the year of the C4.

I was told he pulled it out of a 65. I still haven't pulled the wire from the starter while I have it running to see if it's a solenoid/wiring problem. I'll do that today. It just sounds really bad.

Well guess what everyone? It turns out that the guy who ordered the converter ordered the wrong one--he was really apologetic. He ordered for 70-81 26 spline and the on I need is for 66 for a 24 spline. The converter went on and seated fine to me and I had no problem bolting everything up, but I'm not professional mechanic and did not notice any problems. Anyhow, the new one is being ordered now but now I have to unbolt everything and get the converter out. I guess in a way it's my fault too for not checking for correct part numbers. Well, next time I'll check and make sure all the parts are correct. THANK YOU everyone for all of your input, especially PaulS. The Mav forum was much more helpful than the mustang forums. Now I need to get to work on my 70 mav and pick everyones brains here hahaha. Thanks again and I'll keep you guys posted.

Okay guys, I finally got the car running with the right converter. However, I'm not out of the woods yet. I have two wires with plugs at the end of them for the neutral safety switch. I'm not sure where they go???
