Greetings fellas, my name is Alvin I go by Al. I'm 39 years old, married no kids and a former Army Ranger 99-03. Other than my 93 cobra (sold) This is my first truly classic car and was given to me by an elderly woman who my wife knew, for free. The woman bought it at an auction and had it it sitting in her driveway for two months and she decided not to keep it and my wife told me that she was wanting to get rid of an "old" car. I didn't know what it was or in what condition it was in, so initially I was reluctant to go see it. I finally did go see and I fell in love. I had noticed that the plugs, gas tank/lines wheels and shocks were replaced. She didn't know what the mileage is and I don't know much of these cars but I do know it's an automatic in line six. It pulls decent, cranks up no problems, I replaced the alternator, I'm changing the oil and washing it today. I do want to get a 302 v8 five speed in it one day, I hope that you guys can answer any stupid questions I'll have for this car, lol.

Well you now own the Ford that outsold the Mustang that was kinda a disposable car that cost a few hundred less than the mustang. With that said people used them up and junked them. There is now a love for them and the parts are scarce and people want the bank for parts. Joe over on fb at Maverick comet restoration makes many of the repair sheet metal panels. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1636080899994495/?ref=group_header you will have to join.

Only stupid question is the one not asked.

    Welcome...

Comet out sold Mustang?? What year??

It's commonly stated first year Maverick outsold Mustang but that is also a untruth.

The '69½ Mav did sell 127,833 to Mustang 121,538 '64½, BUT had TWO additional months to do so. Stang changed over to '65 in Aug, Mav to '70 in Oct.

Ford only had one plant tooled for Mustang production(badly miscalculated demand), due to sales, added two additional before end of '65 year. Maverick started with two so there were no shortages.

Same basic automobile, same build plants. Change badging hood, bumpers, rear tail lights and you have a Maverick. Damn. YES the MAVERICK out sold the MUSTANG in ALL production years of the Maverick. Maverick had more production plants. 1969 Maverick-288,342. 1970 Maverick-340,214, Comet-27,577. 1971 Maverick-251,047, Comet-65,842. 1972 Maverick-230,322, Comet-66,236. 1973 Maverick-282,818, Comet-82,716. 1974 Maverick-238,138, Comet-90,113. 1975 Maverick-136,496, Comet-37,222. This is for U.S. and Canada production only. Ford made many more Mavericks and Comets in other countries into 1979.

LOL, you need to look at REAL model year figures, not calendar year. If ya wanna cheat with Comet, I'll toss in Cougar, built same plant, same drivetrain etc.

Model year for model year, Maverick did out sell Mustang(now at FIVE plus years old)... First year vs first year, second vs second etc, it didn't happen.

    Hello Al :
After you clean it up .. drive it awhile .. Don't change the Transmission Fluid .. Maybe just the filter ..If it shifts .. LEAVE IT ALONE ..New Fluids tend to be problematic when the Old Fluid is drained out .. I changed fluid on TWO cars before with C4s and inside of a month the trannys were slipping .. I've since replaced the cars after installing an
AOD and a Stick in the other one.. No Problems !!

Thanks for the tip, Chip. I haven't had time due to work to really look as to why it won't stay running once it's started, I replaced the fuel filter and added seafoam, and still sputters.

I respect you Chip but slipping shortly after changing fluid was a dying transmission. Would have happened not changing fluid, apparently new friction modifiers hasten demise.
