Yeah, those gears will drive you nuts on the highway. I only have 3.89:1 in mine and on the highway with the 4-speed the engine was turning 3400 rpm. That's why I got a T5. Now it turns less than 2000 rpm.

This is very common, I am in the process of doing it too, While I can't answer your question directly, and someone else probably will, if you match the engine to the correct intake and correct sized carburator, you shouldn't have a hp loss whatsoever, in fact, you may gain horsepower. (the regular gain just by switching from a 302 to a roller 5.0 is about 85 horses) a good carb swap may pick up a few more than that, but you won't have all of the awesome benefits of driveability and the such that efi offers.

I wish I would have ran into you guys a month ago....I had a chance to buy a complete 9" rear end with 3.50 gears for 170 bucks, but thought the 3.50 wouldn't be low enough.........as far as the 5.0....I still have a chance to buy that, its out of an 85 stang GT....100 bucks...and runs. The guy also has rebuilt 289 heads out of a 66 for 100 bucks........maybe I shoud spend some money here!

The good thing about the 85 engine is that it is already set up and ready for carburation, as the 85 was the last year for a carburated mustang, it is also the first year for the roller cam setup. Just ditch that oem 4 bbl manifold and stock 4 bbl holley, lots of hp to be had there!

Cool...think I'll snag that motor, even if I don't use it right now...I can always throw it in later....or use it for another project. Thanks for the info!
