Exactly Jeff S. plus.. with the nose on the comets, for safety the bumper has to be larger than the grill or if you hit something or someone backs into your car you toast the grill, the radiator and possibly MORE! But they look good on the COMET

The 1200 pound monstrosity that dominates and overpowers the beauty that is naturally radiating from a Mercury Comet is abysmal and horrendously overdone. Thanks Ralph Nader. Starting in 1973 the bumper(chrome log) is ridiculous and asinine. It has to go. I would rather remove it and risk my amazing Mercury being mistaken for a common Maverick than leave that enormous chrome girder hanging off the front and robbing my car of at least 20 hp and 40mph off the top end.

I will go without until forced by law enforcement or a smaller, properly proportioned bumper comes my way. Even though my wife prefers Mavericks and would gladly accept a Maverick hood and grill in place of my sexy beaked hood which has dents from an unprovoked tree assault last year.
The bumper tuck looks far better on a Maverick than it does on a Comet. The Comets front end is too busy and angled to have a food wide interstate of chrome and rubber strips on it no matter how close it is to the grille. The small bumper looks way better.

Your wife sounds like a very intelligent and cultured person.

I don't want to create enemas, here, er, enemies. But I never was fond of the "busy" comet front end.

    LOL enemas! Ha!
I have considered the Grabber hood because I like the twin scoops so much. That opens up all kinds of customization options for grilles too. My hood has dents now from the oak trees attempted murder.

You know Mercury is a brain damaging chemical, I think youve overdosed with all those claims. :rofl2:

The flat grill on the early Mavericks(without turn signals) looks clean and very nice to me. It looks easily customizable too. I like the straight hood edge as well. My main love for the Comet is the awesome tail lights and the fact that it's a Mercury. It instantly makes it better.
My wife likes mavericks, even the tail lights.

Overall I'd rather have either than a Mustang.

is there a junkyard anywhere near you? if you get real good measurements you could spend a day looking at cars and trucks until you find something you like better than your current bumper...
