lacquer is still used on cars.... it is great for show cars....but only for show cars... cars that hardly see the light of day....why? because it is so easy to buff out and get a deep shine with little to no work....its not recommended for every day use...but if someone wanted to spray a car real fast and cheap...oh i dont know..say after an accident to get alot of money but not spend much on materials....yeah...its been known to happen quite a bit....and when the paint fades later i have heard people say, oh thats because you dint treat the paint after it was painted... believe me. people are shoddy at times
I painted my motorcycle with lacquer ... it sucked because I had to be so careful when filling the tank ... gasoline acts like paint remover to lacquer ...
My car was original paint ... I wasn't there to witness the entire paint job .. I know they did a lot of sanding buy they did not bring it all the way down to bare metal ...
I didn't think lacquer was still available and according to the link below it has been discontinued by most manufacturers. Most of your economical cheapy spray jobs will be done in standard enamel these days. I personally haven't seen lacquer up here for many, many years, likely due to VOC (volatile organic compound) laws or possibly due to lead content? http://www.paintforcars.com/faq.html
I know my supplier does not carry lacquer. Even if it is available, I seriously doubt any one sprays it any more. Clear coat is just as easy to buff, has way more depth, and is way more durable than lacquer could ever hope to be.
