that hole size would be for a...stock shifter. here is the hole we drilled to install Collins cable shifter...
Hope your trip went well up in the great Northwest,only thing I`ve been doing is porting my hds. and getting ready to buy some ferrea valves.
Ferrea valves are second to none, I've used the Competition Plus, 6000 and 5000 series which are much better than Manley........IMHO Yes, driving 676 miles in one day was a little much but my Hemi Dodge pulled the trailer great and got over 15mpg doing it. Only one time did the temp gauge get more than dead center...........when I was stuck behind a big rig doing 30mph up the back side of the Siskiyou Pass. Coming down the other side was interesting as most of the big rigs have their brakes on and are doing 40mph............I really need to do the brakes on the Dodge after doing that twice. I had so much bias on the trailers brakes I could almost stop the Dodge.................maybe I had better check them also. We worked like dogs to try and get everything done but the only thing we didn't get to was the repair of the tunnel hole. I found a tunnel the last day we were there at American Classics in Vancouver, WA. They had two 71's, a couple 77's and one 70. Cost me $75 to have them cut the complete tunnel out. I didn't get a chance to see the whole floor but the tunnel just has some minor rust. This week I'll tackle the tunnel.
Ok, here is what I have to work with. The front of the tunnel has been widened on the left side, for what I'm not sure. Work starts tomorrow.
I can see why your tunnel was widened if your car ever needed to have a standard trans shifter installed coming through that small tunnel. You can see the size of the hole that was needed to install my V-Gate. Pretty much used up the entire left side so that was my reasoning for transplanting a larger tunnel in the 70.
When the car raced B/SM in the late 70's it had a Boss 302 and toploader 4spd. With the 408 and Powerglide there is no need for having the tunnel that wide any longer, plus I want to mount my shifter a little higher for easier reach.................but most of all I just want to fill the huge hole in the tunnel.
I had to cut out the upper part of my tunnel to make room for the blowproof,and also had to cut out the left side pretty heavily like the guy building the 351 pro stock replica.Fabbed new metal under the dash and already installed it but hav`nt done anything w/ the shifter hole yet.
floor holes Hey John, my experience, the early holes were smaller and the later were much larger - see attached, in the floor piece photo, in the top right of the floor section (the passenger half of a "cat hump" floor) shows the PSide cut out for factory floor shift whereas earlier photo (pdf) shows just enough for the shifter base. I guess the moral of the story is cut it out under wherever the hump fits best as you should have plenty of room to play with...
John, looking at the photo from post #21 makes we wonder if you could make the entire top piece of your tunnel removable? Might be a handy addition
I took last week off, but have been looking at the tunnel and.............I am not going to be able to remove the front portion because they have modified the crossmember that the tunnel attaches to and and how it supports the trans mount...............if I cut it out there would be some serious fabrication.................so, I will remove the tunnel at the rear of the crossmember and attach part of the tunnel to fill the hole. Personally, I just can't see making a removable tunnel because that was what it had before and then there is still the huge hole.
