Ok, that's exactly what I did, torque wrench to 100 then 90° back. So I won't touch it. So my stiffening of the steering as I drive has to come from somewhere else like the pump?

I'm far from a expert on these systems... If problem occurs after warm up, I'd guess either the pump is weak and not able to make required pressure after fluid thins out, or the piston in cylinder could be worn allowing fluid to bypass...

    What fluid are you using??

The piston was rebuilt professionally (so not by me) 2 years ago.

I am using Ford approved one, can't remember the brand, could that matter? If so I can purge and use one you guys would recommand.

I'm not recommending this fix but in the olden days car lots often added approx half can of STP to the system... Made up for excessive wear & clearance, plus noisy pumps were all but silent... These days I'd probably try one of the Lucas products, I believe they market power steering fluid as well...

Just curious, when is the last time you greased your front suspension, especially the socket at the end of the control valve?

Front suspension was all greased up a year ago when I fully redid it. Socket at the end of the valve as I rebuilt it a few weeks ago.

    Good morning!

Long time after the facts follow up question, the other day, I installed a new water pump and I used this opportunity to swap all belts for new ones, the Power Steering one was pretty new (like a year old) so I kept it, I have pulled the Power Steering pump as far as I could prying on it but the belt still looks loose (flapping around visually when the engine is on and sounding like it slips when getting hot).

Any tips to pry the power steering pump a bit further? On the bolt "rail" there is still travel possible but possible travel goes vertical and prying pushes it horizontally so I am guessing this is my issue?

    Thank you!

Sounds like you need a shorter belt, from your statement. Not exactly sure what your say w/ hor/vertical issues?

Ok, I will go and get a shorter one then, sorry about the horizontale vertical thingy, hard to explain clearly but hopefully the shorter belt will do :)

The arc of travel for adjusting belt is kinda tricky, don't remember how I set tension on mine. Just don't pry on the housing as it's only thin steel.

If it were ½-¾" longer the belt on my comet would be too long, so they can be adjusted.

Tricky indeed, I have been careful not to pry on the housing itself for sure!

    Thanks!
