It's a very rare limited edition sending unit. You had to really be somebody to get it. I hate to let it go but i'll make you a deal because I need more blasting media now and until it runs I won't have to know how much fuel I have. The float is completely gone and I don't remember what all goes on the supply end but I think there was a cloth sock that filtered the big stuff out. neither one was there. what you see is exactly how it came out of the tank. Original OEM stuff. I'm beginning to feel like someone ordered the limited edition rust package with mine.
Not a lot done today. clouded up and rained by 10 or so. I spent the morning fitting the hood scoop to the hood. Although it is supposed to be an original Comet GT scoop the front ends and rear outside edges didn't sit flush so I used a sanding block and releived the very center where the high spot is on the hood then worked my way out until it matched. The scoop was also high at the front right where the mounting studs go again used a block and took some material off there. It now sits almost perfect. I will make a template from the bottom of the scoop to drill the holes to mount it. I'll use my indoor time today to do that. I also notice that some of the mounting studs (where you screw the studs in) closer to the center of the hood don't reach the hood. That's probably why this scoop had so many stress cracks. I'll use some putty to see how much space I need to make up. I'll probably try to find some small rubber washers to fill the space, give me some more support and give me a vibration damper.
Well just bring one by. I'll even give you dinner and a beer. If you are tired from your little drive I'll even change the sheets in the guest room and you can spend the night. What kills me is this one is perfectly straight, no dents, dings or anything.
nice spoiler fit the car nice will have to keep a lookout at the bone yard for one it would look nice on my mav
Arggghhhh why so hard to get blast media? Well only a bit of detail work cleaning up trim etc last few days. Rained last 2 days, now I have to go back to my real job. I ran out of Black blast (coal slag) just as I started the hood a few days ago. I bought 400 lbs in medium grit but it had a ton of what looked like 3/8-1/2 inch long pieces of wire in it, (but it was coal slag) that kept turning sideways in the nozzle and causing clogs. The only other place I can find here that has it sells it in like 30lb tubs for the price of 2 100lb bags. There is a place 1.5 hrs away that has the fine grit in 100lb bags at a good price. I guess I'll have to do that. I have 3 days off next week to work on it and want to blast the hood, fuel tank, door hinges, and lower fender extensions. That is pretty much the end. then it will just be finish body work and I should be ready to paint. Of course details like new hard brake lines, fuel lines, sealing fuel tank, putting dash back in, headlight relays, making custom door panels, Dye the rear seat and all interior plastic, and reassembly may take a little bit also.
More rain, need a garage If someone could come bring me a garage to work in I'd appreciate it. I had 3 days to work on it last week and it rained 2 of them. This week I have Mon-Wed I could be working on it and guess what? Supposed to rain until Thurs. Well today or tomorrow I will drive down to Norfolk and pick up the blasting media. no big rush since I can't use it anyway. I'm thinking 3-4 full days on it and it should be ready for paint. I'm so close to getting all the body work done and getting it in final primer this delay is killing me. Here in Eastern VA we have a limited number of warm but not hot, low humidity days before we get the 100degree 100% humidity days and I would like my clear coat to be clear when I paint it not a haze. :16suspect
I found that when i changed my dash pad a year and a half ago, here's what helped: 1.) i didn't do it. 2.) my wife did 3.) she used her small hands to reach in to remove the nuts 4.) her willingness to help (you can't beat that, i mean really) 5.) she was willing to have her head sit on the floor upside down, legs hanging over the seat to position herself to get to the pain in the a$$ nuts to remove the dash pad 6.) me having enough sense not to laugh (hey i wanna live too) 7.) lastly, my wife willing to do it all over again to reinstall the nuts and the new dash pad, i think i lucked out! Keep at it and it will all come together.
Thanks, it's been a long process, but it has to be in paint and start reassembly this summer. I converted my 2.5 car garage 15 years ago to an office/studio (I'm a photographer) Most of my work is on location so I travel a lot. I spend almost 100 nights a year out of town and mostly in the fall and spring so that just leeves summers to work on it. My business started feeling the economy pinch 3 years ago and my son started college so I also took on another job. Really hard after 28 years of being my own boss. But that really cut into my free time in the summer as well. Right now, in my office I have a hood, trunk lid, one door, dash, spoiler, hood scoop, and most of the interior and a large tool chest which makes it difficult for the few clients that want to drop off products to be photographed. (I try to at least give the impression that I am professional) Looks like I may get some work done today as it isn't raining and may even clear a bit. Hopefully I can get everything I need blasted done today and in primer. If I do, I'll post more pictures tonight.
Inside quarter trim repair more photos Today I had some setbacks and a slight advancement. I put a skim coat of bondo on a door and the hardner must have been bad, 2 hours later still not totally cured... I let that go for now and found that the inside quarter trim (those big plastic panels was so dryed out it was literally crumbling away. Then I noticed the back side was fine so figureing I had nothing to lose I took my sandblaster and used fine black blast (coal slag). It worked better then I expected, it only removed the crumbly stuff not the good plastic. I hope the parts not cleaned will be hidden behind the seat. Here are before and after shots. now obviously, you don't still have the grain pattern but you do have a nice textured finish. Before and detail of before, this stuff flaked just by touching. now the after and a detail of the texture. Hopefully this can help someone else. I'm not so worried about original, just nice and this seems like a good alternative if anyone has panels that are this dried out.
Cool tip ... Worked a bit with my panels lately and they aren't done yet. Will post some pics when I finish them. They were flaky, too. A new product that is out recently is a variation of Krylon Fusion, called "Textured Shimmer". It is available in a few colors, and since I am going to change my interior over to black, I am using the textured black and then shooting Satin Black Fusion over that. The Shimmer version has tiny metallic silver flecks in it to help highlight the texturing ... great on plastic patio furniture, but not what I was going for in the car ... The stuff does look good and go on well, and builds up the texture a bit more. Bought it at Ace Hardware.
Today I primed and dyed all the interior plastic black. The blasted panels really took the dye/paint well and they look better then i could have hoped given the condition they were in before I blasted them. Only a very slight difference in sheen where the original pattern/plastic remained and that should be hidden behind the seat anyway. Sorry about the image quality. when I have time to work photos are not my top priority and it was getting late and dark. but I think you can tell it came out better then I expected given the condition of the panels to start with. I used Duplicolors vinyl primer and paint. I will get SEM for the seat but I figured for the more rigid pieces this would be fine. Time will tell.
Damn that looks great i mean really, i think everyone on this board can use this information at some point or another.
Very little progress last couple weeks. Because of rain and work schedule. I've had about 3 days when I could have worked on it but my daily driver had a heater core go, then a line to the aux. heater core sprung a leak and yesterday the radiator which was replaced less then 2 years ago. I have 2 conference calls today and today is my wifes birthday so that shoots tonight. Oh well.
