Finally getting time back on it. I almost have the left door done. Just some real fine finishing left, Yesterday the rear spoiler got knocked off a saw horse and broke the corner off....again. (both corners were broken in shipping when I recieved it) That is almost done now. waiting for primer to dry and see what detail sanding needs to be done. Plans for today.. Get left door hung, remove right door, I need to do a small amount of work on right door from body line down. I had blasted it and put it in primer to hold until I could get to it. If possible get right door rehung and start assemble to make sure..... 1. everything fits and lines up nicely. 2. make sure pieces haven't wandered off 3. make sure bolts/nuts/screws are all there and actually in the bags marked 4. so I can see that the last 5 summers haven't been just a bad dream
I really like how you blasted and painted the rear panels. I'm going to try that method the next time I do a set.
You'll just want to knock down the "tooth" a bit with a scotch brite pad or something. before you paint/dye them. The old dried out plastic came off very easy. I was surprised how well it worked as it was a I have nothing to lose attempt to save them.
Well, she's in final prime. I just finished an hour or so ago. During the body work I have been using laquer primer because otherwise I was cleaning the gun more then I was working. Now that the body work is done I have a beige urethane primer on it. I had to shoot it in one of those one car tarp garages and it was VERY tight. I will not be shooting final color in there for sure. Well I was getting started had the first cup mixed and my regulator on the gun died., stopped up, something so I had to just fold the hose over and apply pressure to control air pressure. Not the best situation. No pictures yet since just shot but just imagine an orange. Oh yeah, I also just realized I forgot to shoot the sport mirrors. Oh well, I hope the Viper Yellow covers well. I work tomorrow so no images until Monday at least but I'll get pics soon.
In primer (photos) Sorry it took so long to upload images. I am in the middle of my busy season and out of town most of the time. That also means not much time to work on the car. Here is an image of where I had to shoot the primer. and a side view, doesn't look like much but it's taken 5 summers to get this far.
This is the no progress update. Because of the economy I took on another job for a year. so I haven't touched the car since last update. This spring that should change. I'll post as I get back into it.
wow, I don't remember the year off hand, there are several threads here I got the idea from. Let me search and see if I can find out what year this is. Edit; from my notes it says "82-90? Firebird spoiler"
I have gone a whole year without touching the car. This summer I have some time. It's been too cold or raining when I have had time so far so working on some smaller projects inside for now. I have the AC/Heater box apart and cut new foam for the flaps, I used headliner material, It appeared to be about the right thickness when I test fit it seems to be less pliable and slight gaps because the lower side by the hinge isn't compressing enough. I am hoping this will form and seal when it sits some. I hope this isn't a mistake and will need to come out again to redo. Of course I also cracked a spot in the heater box that will have to be repaired. Also I had some masonite? smooth board like the original door panels, except this is smooth on both sides. I used one door panel as a template and have cut two new door panels. I will cover them in headliner material as well then cover with ballistic nylon. this will very closely match the seats we purchased for the car. I will try to get some photos today and post later tonight. I only have till 3pm today.
Below should be the images of the foam headliner material I cut for the heater box and the door panels for padding. Not the neatest job on the door panels but when covered in Ballistic Nylon and the handles etc in place it should be fine and much better then the broken door panels I had. I'll post again when I get the door panels covered. as you can see lots of rust inside my heater box so lots of clean up and work to do. I only photographed the one door panel but did complete both today.
