Your clear always looks perfect from the gun, I'm surprised you start with 800. Is that just personal preference or was it necessary in this case?

The theory is, the sharper the paper the flatter the panel. I have seen people sand and buff starting with 1500, and yes it will get the clear "flat" and smooth. But if you really look at it afterwords it still has that urethane ripple to it. Its not bad body work, it just didn't get cut glass flat.
If you have ever seen a real all out show car with its dead flat paint, thats how it was done. I sometimes start with 600, but on this one didn't need to.

Its like sanding body filler, if you started with say 500 grit you will eventually get it smooth, but it will never be truly flat, in order to do that you would start with say 100 grit to really cut it.

    Does that make sense?

Yes! Kinda like starting out with a sharp tool vs. a dull one, be it a plane, a drill bit, sandpaper, etc...

I got the roof and both quarters all sanded and buffed. Now time to move on to some mechanical things. I bent up the stainless brake lines, got the heater box and inside heater hoses hooked up. Then I dropped the engine in place, what a moment! A little too much chrome for me, but the valve covers and air cleaner are not staying. I have a set of paint matched Billet Specialties covers to install later after all the fab/dirty work is done. Don't want to scratch them.

Then I got the car back off the floor and up on the Quick Lift ramps. Now I can install the transmission, run the fuel lines, get the driveshaft in etc. So much to do..........

This morning I mounted the brake pedal assembly. Need to do the throttle as well, but found where I have to modify the mount for my liking. I also mounted the seats one last time to make sure things were good just for drill. I am dropping them off tomorrow at the upholsterers and wanted to be 100% positive it all worked properly before I did that. Happy with the fitment, I had my daughter come out and sit to see how things adjust for her. This is one happy kid.

Glenn its getting closer looks like you are down to the nitty gritty stuff like getting dash in and wired up. Her smile makes it all worth it hope she is the kind of girl that will keep everything all spic and span.

So I have started the wiring on the car. Definitely not my forte. I have some help from a good friend that has wired tons of hot rods, so all will be good.

I decided I couldn't live with the coil packs black. They stuck out like a sore thumb, so I took them back off and painted them body color with matte clear.

I started the plumbing of the heater lines from the engine to the fender well. I am using the stainless hose and ends from Gotta Show. Pretty nice stuff.

I installed the parts on the back of the car. Anyone that has been following along knows I pie cut the bumper ends and reshaped them. While not fitted to the new Pro Touring 3/16 gap, this is tons better than any factory Maverick. Love the look of that chrome from Advanced Chrome Plating in Tn. Also installed the trunk lock key and the stainless fuel filler from Johnson's Hot Rod Shop.

    For comparisons.....

I had found a perfect set of NOS tinted glass for the car. Everything but the windshield, which is fine since it is available still. Here is the painted 1/4 window frames all painted and the glass urethaned into the frame.

I have 13" disc brakes at all four corners from Engineered Components Inc. They use all GM parts so if I ever have an issue while traveling everything can be sourced from any good parts store. Here is what the factory, very rough cast caliper is like from GM. No thanks, so I spent 2 hours per caliper smoothing them. Then when done I painted them all body color.

Its all the little things that count and there are a lot on this car, the only thing I dont like about it is its not mine. LOL. It actually feels like an honor to watch this build as I feel it could be a SEMA build or other prestigious event. Gonna have to call you Glenn Foose and hope you dont take that as an insult

Lol...... I have a friend from when we were little kids that is now referring to me that way, Glenn Foose. Its an honor to be thought of that way. Although I would just like to have the ability he has in his pinky alone. Comparably, I'm an amateur.

    Thanks though, really.

Beautiful work. You may think you are an armature but in my eye's you are doing an awesome job and I think you have inspired a lot of us on this forum.

Great work - for sure! Do you think the paint on the calipers will take the heat produced from braking?
