If the Maverick was SCHEDULED to be built first....it would be 100001. If the Comet was SCHEDULED to be built second, it would be 500001.

The sequence in numbers is for ALL cars built at the assembly plant. If a Maverick was built first...then a Pinto for example was built second, then the numbers would be 100001 then 100002.

yes....two cars could have the same last 6 digits of the VIN. they might not both be Mavericks, but they could be as well. The first 5 digits would be where the difference would be.

    I've had a few
This is why each plant has it's own code in the VIN. The second character in the VIN tells which plant the car was built at. So if a '71 Comet was built at Kansas City, with the CUN 500001, the vin would be 1K31F500001. If another '71 comet was built at the St. Thomas plant with the CUN 500001, the VIN would be 1X31F500001. And that's assuming both cars were two doors with 302's, which while possible, would probably be unlikely.

    Cool info guys ... thanks!

Mine was built in Kansas City, and the number means it is pretty early in the 1972 model run. I'll have to investigate more.

Very unlikely since they didn't build Comets in St.Thomas :D It was Mavericks and Pintos. Did they make Comets in Dearborn? If not Kansas made all the Comets. But good info!

If Kansas City was the only plant for Comets, then mine was in the first 3% made for that year, 53,000 2-doors made

Since it was nicely optioned, I now get the impression that maybe it was sent to the dealership for the new-for-72 model release. Nice thought ... :)
