I've seen the same thing...the amber front side marker lights blink on some, but not others. (The red rear ones never blink) You don't need a dual filament bulb. Here's how to make yours blink:

There are two wires connected to each side marker, a brown and a black one. Cut the black wire (the ground) and splice it into the turn signal wire going to the front blinker lights. The left one is light green with a white stripe and the right one is white with a light blue stripe. Leave the brown wire connected as it is. The side markers will now blink opposite of the turn signal lights in front when the headlights are on and at the same time when the headlights are off, but stay lit solid when the headlights are on and the blinkers are off.

Why does this work? Headlights on: When the turn signal is off, the side marker pulls its ground thru the turn signal wire, when the turn signal is on, both sides of the side marker light are now at 12v so the bulb shuts off. Headlights off: the brown wire on the side marker is now a ground and the turn signal wire spliced to the black wire becomes energized and the bulb lights.

    Clear as mud? :D

Also, I believe the sidemarker blinking was only done when the front turn signal lights were below the bumper (69 ½ - 72). Not saying that all of 'em have it, but once the front turn signals were moved up into the grille they were more visible and for some reason Ford didn't bother with making the sidemarkers blink...

The '70 mav I had,the side markers blinked off/on opposite the tailights & front signals, but every other Maverick/Comet I've had(including my '72 Comet) they don't do anything but just stay on.Must have been a '70-71 thing.

Blinking side marker lights might have been a regional requirement like the daytime headlights we have today. None of the cars I have owned had blinking side lamps.
