We did the front tuck and what an improvement Now its time for the rear. Is there a set way in which to do this or do you just throw away the rear supports and start over? The next ? is whats been the norm on reduction.
We took three out of the front and that was the max, hood latch support would be in trouble if you took anymore. I suppose a guy should keep an eye on those qaurter markers when determinating how much to take. Anyone have the up to date poop on these ugly mafa's.
    Thanks Mitch

Not bad ! But to be honest this car is for my kid and I think maybe the big bumpers may serve a porpose. God forbid it should ever happen but!
So I thaink ill stay with the gigantu. Ive looked again and as near as I can tell I would be better off fabing up my own supports. was hoping someone might be on that has done the rear,Im always down for an easier way!

For the front bumper tuck, did you guys just take the brackets off and took off inches off of it? Or were there other things that you needed to do for this mod?

That was it , real easy mod that looks like a million. I just made sure iI marked up and out r/l. not sure that even matters. We found if you set your sub-bumper plate evenly spaced up/down side/side it works fine.
theres enough adjustment in the mounting. also bolt everything in loosely and then pull up tight. Have dismateled twice now for fit and paint and goes together real easy. going to leave off now until after engine swap which we are real close on having everthing needed. Its a pretty good list when you get down all the smalls needed. The total is climing $ Dammit.

The impact absorbers collapse under pressure.
Some folks just pull their car up to a very strong/solid surface and 'drive' the bumpers inward until they like the look.

Once the absorbers collaspe, they stay collapsed.

Also, FWIW, my son has a Fairmont and we compared/measured the bumpers really well... The Fairmont bumpers appear as though they will swap to the Maverick.
They are of the same shape. Almost exactly, front and rear.

There are 2 BIG benefits to these bumpers...

1: They are aluminum, for huge weight loss.
2: They are sleeker. As in they are not as thick in any direction.

    Just a thought.

Ive read that somewhere on here. Id be afraid of doing extra unwanted damage. I think ill measure ,dismantel, fabricate ,reassemble. But if its all for an inch not sure its worth it! I will look into the fairmont bumpers.
that sounds like a good option. W they require a redrill or straight bolt up?

After I done the front bumper tuck on my '74 I though about doing the same to the rear bumper. After visualizing what it will look like when all said and done the end of the bumper will be covering the side marker lights on the quarter panel. It wouldn't be worth the trouble to slide the bumper 3/4"-1". I guess if you section the bumper ends so they didn't wrap around the side of the car it would look better...or move the light. I decided to swap to a small bumper instead.

Another good reason to use the Fairmont bumpers.
They look and are shaped exactly like the Maverick bumpers, but all the details on the Mav bumper are exaggerated. The Fairmont bumpers have all the same features and shapes, but they are half of the 'bulk' of the same feature on the Mav bumper, including the 'wrap around' part on the sides. So they can sit just as far back, but not have an exaggerated wrap over the fenders.

This topic has come up before. A few years ago, a thread had some comparison pics in it, just that no one ever followed through to actually unbolting a bumper and trying one on.

    I gotta do a search now. It'll bother me if I don't.

    Edit:

Okay, I can stop hijacking now! Sorry...;)
Here is a thread I started, but it disintegrated into a
drinking contest and we never got anything much done.:pub:
The comparison pics have been long deleted too.
Bumpers have to be off a Futura or Zephyr too.

Ive heard about the whole applying pressure to do the tuck. I would do it but I'm afraid something wrong will happen. I'd rather just take off the bumper and the mounts and just mod the mounts and put it back on. That sounds safer to me. I'm sure that the absorbers won't get in the way though after mounting again as they will just seem to sink into the bumper.

but anyways, that is my plan, doing the front tuck and swapping out the back bumper for a small one. I've seen a 74 with front 73 bumper tuck and small back bumper. It looked great. Don't think I've seen a huge 74 bumper/small rear combo though.
