Rear Shocks

I recently bought a 73 Maverick and I noticed the left rear shock is behind the axle and the right rear shock is in front of the axle is this right?

 

Yes, that is correct, staggered shocks..........

The purpose is to reduce rear wheel "hop", and it works.
Even today's modern pickup trucks from Ford, GM, and Dodge have staggered rear shocks..
