hmmm... you're giving me ideas... i have the mav in the driveway and im gonna have to get under it soon anyways, and i got a 57 ford wagon thats not going anywhere... and i think i read somewhere that those rears are a bolt-in swap? correct me if im wrong, but that just might happen. even though i only have a 6 banger. heck id do it just for the fun and experience id gain from it. but i don't know if it'd be a better gear ratio, just a fun swap.
the link you posted to is not really worth it. you can take the thirdmember out of your diff and have a posi and gears installed into it for under $1000.00. the auburn and track lock fall under the posi catagory. they use friction to try to evenly distribute the power to both tires. the open is what you should currently have. it will put power to the tire that has the least traction. the detroit locker physicaly locks the axles toghter when you apply power, ensuring both tires get equal power. in turns if you apply the power it will lock the axles toghter and can create several different problems. the posi's are the best choise for a car that is primarely driven on the street. you shouldnt have to goto a 9" unless you plan on some serious drag racing.
Im wanting a cheap rearend for driving around town and getting good power from light to light and maybe drag race from time to time.
get your 8" regeared and a posi put into it. you can try your luck by going to the salvage yards and trying to find a mustang 2 with a posi in it already. the thirdmember in them will bolt into the mavericks housing.
you can take you car to a shop that reagears diffs. or you pull the third member out and take it to the same shop. look for a shop that specializes in diffs. if you cant find one then try shops that install lifts in trucks, or shops that modify hot rods. they can do it or will know somebody that can do it for you.
If you are planning on installing a 347 with a 4spd you might have some trouble with the 8". If the 347 4spd is your goal and in your future and you can budget it in, the 9" would be the better choice. I know a place in McMinnville that would be able to help you out. They are not the cheapest in town but they are good. Besides, you do not want go cheap on componets that involve torque.
I will probably just go 3.55 and keep my 302 and put a mild cam in it later on i can sale my rearend if i need to. Wheres the place in mcminville? do you live there thats not to far we should meet up some time.
I love my LockRight locker from Richmond gears. It is a ratcheting locker that locks on the straight line and allows a racheting differential in the turns. Frank (71 Gold) If I remember correctly has the upgraded version of my lockright which his is called a Powertrax noslip. My LockRight is noisey, it clicks and pops and sounds like a really large ratchet when you make low speed sharp turns. other than strenght (Frank's is stronger) the biggest difference between the LockRight and the NoSlip is the NoSlip is supposed to be quieter and of course the price. The LR is around $300 and something with most everythign you need to install it and i think the NoSlip is more like $500- $600. The both install with hand tools (should have a torque wrench) I would buy either one of those locker units and buiy the gears 3.55:1 or 3.80:1 and take the center chunk out yourself and take it to a tranny or rearend shop and have them install the gears and the Locker at the same time. I put my locker in myself and left the stock gears. I am wishing that I had done them both at the same time now. Because nove I have to get under the car again and pull the center chunk again to have the gears changed. Your other choice for a bugdet build could be a Limited slip unit like this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
I'm very happy with the locker in mine. It ratchets well on turns unlike others I have driven. They are noisy in parking lots and get strange looks now and then but thats OK. Just dont give her on a corner. Not like thats a good idea with these cars anyhow. I would say it doesnt corner much different than when I had the posi in the other car. It chirps a bit on right turns at the lights. Its all good though. Should have seen the look on the young guys faces at work when I spun the rear wheel by hand on the hoist and the ratchet did its thing. They gave me this terrified blank look thinking something broke. Told them its OK its a locker. Might as well have spoke in Chinese. Had to explain what a locker is.
I have an Auburn locker in mine, and it is the ratcheting type also. It is quiet, but does click a bit in a slow turn. Auburn says it doesn't hurt it, so I don't worry about it.
the only locker that im aware of from auburn is there eletric locker. its not a ratcheing type. do you have any info you your locker. i would like to know more about what you have.
