Has anyone attempted to swap a rearend out of a ranger? I found a 8.8 with 4:10 gears that's in a 02/03 ranger.
    It's a peg leg but...

Most of those had factory limited slip units.

I’ve have two Rangers with the “off road” package, both came with 4:10’s but only one came with limited slip.

I was just curious on what it would take to get it installed in a maverick. I'm guessing it would still have to be cut like the explorer, especially if the chunk is offset like they are.

I apologize in advance if I ramble on.
Yes, both the Ranger & Explorer axles have the pinion offset 2-7/8” to the right of center. I have heard of people putting the Explorer axle in Mavericks without cutting but drive shaft tunnel modifications will be needed. To put a narrowed Ranger axle in a Maverick/Comet you’ll need to make the same modifications as a narrowed Explorer axle. Cut left side axle tube & use two right side shafts and relocate spring perches

The MaverickComet stock 8" is 56-1/4" mounting surface to mounting surface, spring perches 42-3/4" OC.

Ranger 8.8 58-1/2” (narrowed 55-5/8”) mounting surface to mounting surface, spring perches 38-1/2”OC.

Explorer 8.8 59-1/2” (narrowed 56-1/2”) mounting surface to mounting surface, spring perches 38-1/2” OC.

A narrowed Ranger axle is 5/8 narrower than Maverick/Comet stock 8”, with a narrower axle you’ll have to watch tire to leaf spring clearance. A narrowed Explorer axle is 1/4” wider than Maverick/Comet stock 8”.

If you’re planning 4-500 HP I think you’d be wasting time & money putting a peg leg 28 spline axle in your car,
Explorer 3:73 rears are plentiful around here and I’ve even found a couple 4:10’s for $100 each.

Agreed...JY wants atleast 250 for one. Unfortunately JY's are not plentiful here. We have 2 and neither really have much but I'm still searching. The rear disc isnt a huge concern for me but do want something better than the 8" I have now. Guess I could just change the chunk and axles and not have to worry about fabbing another rearend to fit my car.

Are any of these somewhat close to you?

You could have them get you a Explorer axle from one of their northern yards.

Closest one on that list is atleast 3 hours away. I appreciate you taking the time to make that list.
How much does it cost to have an explorer axle cut and everything put in to place so it can be used...rough estimate. I'm guessing it's not comparable to a new ring and pinion, locker unit and axles.
I have a co-worker that lives in Houston that may be able to snatch one up.

I have no idea of the cost to have someone do that. I’m doing it all myself so cost should be around $500 mounted in the car with new brakes.

I wish I had that ability, tools, and time. There are many trades I wish I had learned at an earlier age. Not saying I'm too old to learn...just the ease of resources here are not as plentiful as back home in MS

I completely understand, find a local welder/fabricator show them the link in post #2 and they should be able to give you a price.
It will save you some $$ if you do the dis-assembly & cleanup, as long as you don’t mix up the shims there’ll be no need for a axle builder to “set it up”.

I guess my biggest concern is making sure the spring hangers are in the correct spot for the angle of the driveshaft. I'm guessing that is the most important part of it all. I will look in to it and see if I can find someone to get it done.
