Short shafts are not in short supply. They just cost twice as much as a long tail.
Every Mustang ever equipped with a toploader 4 speed, used a short shaft.
Torinos, Galaxies, Fairlanes, Mercs, etc... used long tails (for the most part).
Therefore, the short tail is more desireable because Stangs drive the market.
Long tails tend to show up discarded in a back yard, and folks that find them don't know the difference. They snap them up for a great price and then find out that to use a long tail is essentially the same as swapping to a C6.
The worst part is guys with a small block that pick up an FE 4 speed for a great price, but don't know the difference. Again, FE short or long tails are not very sought after. They get passed around between folks that don't know better. The FE short tail looks every bit like the 'right' tranny, but the nose is only 7/8" long. This means the nose is not long enough to ride in the crank bushing. This will destroy the input shaft and bearing quickly.
Getting OT, better stop now... ;)
