    why 1/8?

Factory isn't nearly that thick there, is it? looks like roughly the same as the body panels.

i believe the tower is 1/8"
i welded in 3/16" for the "notch job"
    thicker the better.....right?
i dont think it will hurt any.

The factory stuff is not 1/8" but it is also not flat. Rounded metal has more strength than flat. Thats why floor pans have all those channels in them. So I figured 1/8" flat metal should be strong enough. I'm no structural engineer so I'm just guessing. I've done a couple of the shock tower mods with 1/8" and so far so good.

Would it be detrimental to the strength of the tower to NOT weld plate, but leave it open?

Or is the plate welded in just for looks?

By the way, I ask that not because I am lazy, but because I don't have a welder...yet.

I asked my wife for one for my birthday, but that is not unitl July 31. Don't want to wait.

Can always add the plate later.

I would not run without welding them up. The shock towers are a structural member. They support the entire front suspension, the springs are in the tower. You have the weight of the engine wanting to pull the shock towers toward each other (the shock tower braces help prevent this from happening)
