its not in your linkages, i replaced all my linkages when i bought the car when i was 14 and it made the steering worse . i think the gummed up link ends helped keep my car straight. rebuilding ur steering box would make a huge difference
There is potentially play in the control valve causing wander. http://www.stangerssite.com/HowItWorksControlValve.html Also how are the bushings on the steering ram, they are just rubber shock bushings and do wear out. One thing I noticed when I still used that style is that I went with a newer ford power steering pump, they put out higher pressure at low rpm's but lower pressure overall instead of the old eaton power steering pumps. That helped calm my steering down especially at higher engine rpm's. Of course I went with a different power steering setup from almost everyone else and now I dont have those problems anymore.
borjawil, There is a piece sold by Mustang parts houses that remove the valving unit from the left end of the center link, to make the conversion from power to manual. That ought to take the slack out if properly designed. That is a piece that I have yet to get. I took my valve apart and stacked washers in it to take up the slack. Do so at your own risk ... It lasted 20K miles of driving, but I want to do it right. If it ever let go, it would be ugly.

What I remember is when checking the suspension, like the ball joints, your supposed to put a 2x4 or something under the upper control arm. Between the arm and the ledge. Like I said before, there are different ways of checking our front ends. Hope you find someone who knows how.
Wider than stock front tires make this condition much worse. The power steering alignment specs are a little light on caster too, which doesn't help. There should be a grease fitting on the control valve ball joint that, if greased, helps for a little while. This type system is nowhere near as tight as a rack and pinion or the Borgenson steering gear upgrade due to the spool valve movement in the maverick control valve.
