Got mine on my 17th birthday. (22 years ago). I was a bit upset at the time because I was trying to save up for one of two mustangs I had my eye on. A 70 302 fastback and a 72 351C. I drove the car for almost 6-8 months and a friend's brother was selling his 71/302 Mav for 150.00. I got it and had everything I needed to do the V8 swap from my 250-I6(the car rust bucket-but I wish I knew to keep the small bumpers and other things at the time). The car got put on hiatus for some time, and now has a 375-400 hp 306 (estimated) and went a best of 11.77@114mph (in 1991). Yes since 1991 it has pretty much sat dormant. I have been turning wrenches on it and getting back into it thanks to Rick Book. I met Rick at Pinks in Baytown TX at the Pinks event and he gave me the web info. (Also found out we are practically neighbors) Thanks Rick. Thanks to this site, I have gotten alot of the fire back to get into the hobby I love again.

i was looking for a first car, but didnt want the generic honda or anything that i see all the time so i was looking at classic cars. i had never seen one before in my life and didnt even know they existed, i saw an ad for it, called the guy up and went to go see it, thought it was a great looking car, took it for a drive and just had to have it. came back with the money, drove it home, and ill never get rid of it.

when I was a teenager I had a subscribtion to Hotrod and they had a prostock issue that showed a ford and mercurys entrys ( mavericks and comets),then my aunt bought a 70 or 71 new and I used to set in the plaid seats and pretend it was mine, in 1992 my daughter was turning 16 and wanted an early Mustang, after looking at some nice ones a girl could drive safly in it was going to cost alot of money, I started looking for a maverick grabber, I hadn't seen one in years, within 2 weeks one showed up in the paper, my daughter haveing never seen one was not excited, I took her to look at it but she still showed no interest I thought, when we got home she told my wife how dissappionted she was not to get it, had even named it, I called and someone else was on the way to look at it so I bought it right then over the phone, 1972 grabber, 302 auto, air ,ps,new carpet, new paint, new tires, factory wheels and hubcaps /beauty rings, new muffler for 1800.00. She drove it all through highschool and got a new ford ranger optioned out( $19,000 )she ordered and paid for in 95 to go to college in , I let her take our tarris to trade in because she was going to trade in the mav so it became mine!

I wrecked my 4 door Pontiac, and my ins. co. gave me a draft thought it was a check. I found a car lot that was willing to take the draft so I didn't have to wait. At 18 years old you want a car, The only car he had that the draft would cover was a dark green 71 grabber w/200 I6 and a three on the tree. I dreamed of making a hot rod out of it but never had the money to do anything. About 4 years later it got hit in a parking lot, was totaled. well in 2005 I was looking for a classic car in my price range, saw a 74 grabber same color and the memory's came flooding back. I now have a rust free 71 grabber I got from Jim so he could get his pinto. I hope to finish it this year.

    1) Dyno Don's SOHC 427 Maverick

    2) The Super Modified Maverick featured as a project car for Super Stock and Drag Illustrated magazine.

    3) My buddy's Mav that I used to ride shotgun in while going to high school, and the various adventures we had. One unintentional off-road trip is a memory that will stay with me forever. Almost rolled the car, sodded the entire undercarriage, and got the car stuck in the mud for 2 hours trying to get back to the road where the highlights of that day. Glad we didn't get maimed ...:thumbs2:

Stopped at a convenience store for a dr pepper with my daughter. Looked across the road, and there it sat, with a 4-sale sign. My daughter decided she had to have it, and in the same breath, said, what is it? :rofl2: We went across, and looked it over. I knew exactly what it was, and knew it would be a good first car. Told her to call her Dad (figured he wouldn't tell her no)
He's halfway across the country, and tells her if we want it, Mom has to do the work, as he's not home enough to take it on now. (he's and OTR truck driver) She looks at me, I jump in. It's my gift to my baby girl. Her 3 older brothers are thinking they should've gotten something like that. Younger brother is now looking for a Mav. :yup: She asked when it was going to be done, and I told her, probably never, sweetheart, always something more to do.

I drove a beater 65 Mustang in High School and sold it after graduation, I’d always liked the look of Maverick Grabbers everyone in the late 70’s & early 80’s had a Mustang or Camero as they do today. I got a job making $5.89 pr hr rode the bus for eight months saved $4,000 and was going to buy a 78 Mustang II King Cobra my older brother talked me out of it. I went to used car lots there were two side by side one lot had a light metallic green 72 Grabber with 3 speed, headers, & moons the other lot had a 72 Ret Comet GT with glass packs, L60‘s in back and Firestone Super Sports all the way around it was the most unique car I’ve ever seen at the time so I bought it for $3,000. Then around 2006 I was shopping around internet for an 80’s Fox body Mustang with a nice sound and with luck stumbled on a few Comets and Mavericks for sale I searched, waited, called on a lot there were none close buy. I came real close to buying that beautiful black Grabber tilt rise front end, nitrous oxide 302 in Oklahoma I’m sure you’ve all seen for sale then I finally found one in Denver with a lot’s of new parts and a 302 and a I nice throaty sound now I want just one more.

    Family tradition

my dad was a special vehicles machanic in the air force. He had a maverick, and raced it in Alaska on the airstrip. I never got to ride in that one. Later in life he move to Michigan, bougt another mav. On a visit I asked if we could take it out, it was night and it didn't have any lights in it yet. So we set the seats down in it, taped the headlights in, and plumed the carb. After goin about a half mile down the road we turned around and he stood on the gas! My seat wasn't bolted down so all I saw untill we got back the garage was the head liner. :) that did it for me!

In 1974 my mom bought a 74 4 door to replace her 64 Comet 4 door. In 1978 I bought my first car, the 70 that I still own today. Bought it from my uncle for $200 after my cousin blew up the engine. I replaced the engine and started driving it when I turned 16. Swapped in a 289 my senior year in high school.

Got tired of seeing Mustangs, wanted a car that nobody really had. A friend of mine pulls up in the Mav and sais check out my new bucket. :drool:Fell in love with it that very moment,NOBODY in town had a Maverick back then(2002) and use to talk bad about mine. Now you hear everybody saying i want a Mav,starting to see more around out here. They know who brought the Mavs back in my town. Everybody knows that orange Maverick when they see it.

My dad work at a ford dealership and always brought home new cars. He brought home a 72 Comet gt, red with white interior, I loved it. My first car was a Comet. Now I have a GT, red with white interior.

I got involved because I was looking through e-bay at old cars in 2003 and for the first time I saw a Comet, wasnt sure what it was but loved the body lines. After I saw it, I found out it was basically a maverick, and was like oh thats what a maverick is.

I fell into it really--older gentleman up the street had it in his garage for years. I'm the 3rd owner and am in the process of taking it back to original state (or as close as poss). Seems like everyone has Mustangs etc so thought a Grabber would be something different and fun all in one. My first car was a Merc. Montego, then a Granada after that, so Fords have always run well for me--have a 02 Taurus now even and ran an old 83 Escort for years before that! lol
On another note though, sorry Ford guys, I have had a soft spot for 68-70 Cameros and would love to have a 69 or 70. : )
