he was a...spark plug tech...and didn't know they didn't make the larger plugs...sounds like a lot of the techs i talk to when calling about any issues i have with anything..."that might work"... "that should work"...i want them to tell me...how it works, not agree with me on how it might work...:yup:

why would you say all this.
simply he was recommending the plugs. then he found out that i had older heads that have the bigger threads and that they didnt make them i that size. you do not help.

1974 was the transition year ("cough" duraspark and "cough" emmisions)

D4TE/D4DE with (with thermeractor emmisions) have the small plugs

    D5TE-EB,D5OE-GA, A3A, A3B (1975 351w and 302w heads) have the small plugs

like i said i just scrapped some d5's

D= the 70's decade the second number is the year

    hence D4 and D5 is 1974 and 1975

    this is a D5 head

I don't think anymore proof is needed just wanted to clarify this for the board. ford used what they had on hand untill the stock was depeleted so its possible to see 18mm plugs through late 75 on non emmisions cars but are very uncommon.

I stand corrected. But I will add that I've never run across those heads, probably cause the 302's of that vintage are pretty much completely worthless and I've always just moved on when I found one. The only ones worth looking at from 1971-1986's are the 78-79 motors. And even then, only certain blocks these had are worth anything. The blocks in question are the D8VE-A3A and D9AE-E3A. These had the Hi-Po main caps.

Where did I say a roller block was better ?:16suspect Be that as it may, I built my 331 around an 88 roller block and it's been together now for 7 years and more 6500-7 grand runs than I care to remember. The 78-79 blocks are the equivalent of the Mex blocks, which are mere copies of the 289 Hi-Po blocks. And all these blocks (1968 to 1979) weigh the same (134-136 pounds) And in case you wonder where I got that info, I got it by tearing down these blocks and actually weighing them on a digital scale.
