Spectre car

Why do I have the feeling that this car will be so far off the original design parameters/concepts that it will not even be funny...

Are those gauges to the far right are gonna be hard to see from the drivers seat?
Thanks for the pics.

I don't know, why DO you feel that way. It was designed with an upgraded Turbo Supra engine, a 5 speed and a 9" that would handle the power which is exactly what is going into it. Once everyone looked at the plans and decided what it would take to build it, it was decided that the stock Maverick subframe, and stock suspension and the stock brakes would not handle the power and would not be very safe at all, so those were all upgraded. The car is being built to drive the hell out of it, and it is being built to be safe. It will still get the upgraded stereo and working A/C. What is your real issue with the car Cody?

Thanks,

Actually, at first when we laid it out we all thought the same thing, but those gauges are really easy to read. And there's still room for the Maverick emblem..................(y)

It looks really good in the car, the top of the panel fits under the lip of the dash pad, and the bottom edge is held in place with polished #6 allen head machine screws.

It could be the impression that my wife and I got from the Spectre group while on Power Tour... we spent at least an hour a day with them, and they were fairly up front about what they were looking for in the final product. Yes, safety and performance where stressed, but so were comfort and driveability. Also, they asked that the design be fully fleshed out and with no loopholes. From what I have seen, your design provided an engine/trans suggestion, and basic exterior theme. Other than "mods to shock towers", there is nothing listed for front suspension. Rear is listed as possibly keeping the Maverick rear or swapping a 9 inch, with leaf springs moved inboard and modifications for tire clearance. Nothing is listed for braking modifications. Clutch, fuel system, radiator, tires? Interior is listed simply as recovered Supra seats and "Bitching Stereo System". Nothing about dash, air, trim, headliner, trunk. Also, loose the trunk for a fuel cell in a vehicle that is to be driven on Power Tour? It is "being built to drive the hell out of it, and be safe", but you are going to stack all of your bags behind the front seats for a road trip that involves drag racing and road courses?

I guess my take is, they asked us for a complete design with everything fleshed out, basically ready for them to start ordering parts on day one. I saw several designs that looks like they had months of work put into them, just like the three months we spent on ours. Very honestly, other than the photoshops, I could have put together a general outline such as yours in an hour or so. Even so, Spectre basically has enough leeway to build whatever they want, while only using your basic color scheme and engine/transmission. It does seem awfully convienient that the engine you propose they just happen to have two of sitting around...

I really hate for this to come off the wrong way, I actually like the broad strokes of your design. I just feel that things were somewhat miss-represented as to what they were looking for in a concept. We did a complete design that would be comfortable for long road trips, run low 11's, and maintain 22+mpg on regular unleaded. Braking, suspension, interior, gauges, tires, wheels, rear end, transmission, clutch, ignition, turbo and management. We found what vendors made the custom parts required to make these work together. If it would have been presented to us that they were looking for only broad strokes, we would have put together the photos and then spent a couple of days hashing out the driveline/suspension, and been done with it. I am actually curious as to what the final outcome will be, and how much you will like the finished product with so much leeway being left to others. In other words, will the finished product be what you had pictured in your mind's eye, but didn't communicate in your design?

Overall it's a pretty neat build,Lots of work going into it, but it's too bad about the Toyota engine, it's almost like a sellout, just to get the in-crowd (target market) to like it more since it's a Supra engine. I'm all for engine swaps, but this import stuff don't interest me, a Cobra engine, or the new Boss would have been cool, or even like the one thats being built with the Viper engine, thats Cool! Overall I guess it's interesting, so keep us posted. I'm sure it'll end up in the pages of Hot Rod, they need something to fill the pages of that awful magazine, and I've been a subscriber since 1982.

Sorry Cody, I wasn't made aware of any of those parameters. I ran across their booth in Little Rock and saw this blue Maverick, the exact car that I drove in high school, so I stopped to check out what it was all about. As soon as I saw it had an Inline 6 I said, it needed a Turbo Supra Inline 6 in it. One of the reps there came over to talk to me and mentioned that it was a contest to design the car. He gave me the entry form and all that it said on the entry form was the design input needed to have Drivetrain, Suspension and Chassis, Interior, Body Mods and Paint. I included all of those and sent it in. From that point on it was up to them.

They also just happened to have a Baer Big Brake Kit, MOMO Seats, and Ford Rear End in their shop, should I tell them not to install those because it was not in the design? It's their car, in the end they will build it like they see fit. Just enjoy it for what it is.

I'm sure that alot of the pure Domestic guys will be turned off by the Toyota drivetrain, but most don't have a clue about the Supra and it's capabilities. It has nothing to do with the Target Market, they are true freak engines. There are not many cars out there that can do what the Supra does. Guys have made 1,000RWHP on stock internals, never took the head off. With upgraded internals, well over 1,500RWHP. Low 8 second passes with Bone Stock 6 Speeds, Driveshafts and IRS Differentials, that's nuts. The Titan Motorsports Celica's run low 6's with stock blocks and cranks.

The 550WHP we're shooting for can be made on junkyard motors, all day long, reletively cheap, and never worry about breaking a sweat!

I am very familiar with the Supra's capabilities, also the cost of those capabilities. I have never seen a 1,000RWHP Supra that has never had the head off... stock internals, yes. Bone stock 6-speeds? Check into it, most I have seen in low 8's are no longer using 6-speeds, and quite a few have been swapped to live axle. Titan Motorsports Celica may have a stock block and crank, but it is a carbon fiber bodied car with a full tube chassis. Here is the info on the Titan Motorsports "world's fastest street Supra" from their website:

Borla Full Turbo Back Exhaust utilizing XR-1 technology Greddy T88H-38GK
Greddy 4 Row Intercooler
Greddy Profec E01 Boost Controller
Titan Motorsports full built race motor
Titan Motorsports full race head
Titan Motorsports Fuel System w/1000cc injectors and Weldon Fuel pump
Fluidyne Radiator
Adell Wiggins Clamps on Intercooler and Water Necks
Titan Motorsports Radiator Hard Pipe
Motec M800 ECU for engine management
Motec CDI-8 for ignition management
Weld Alumistar 15x10 rear
Weld Alumistar 15x3.5 front
BFGoodrich 325/50/15 Drag Radials
Greddy Oil Cap
Greddy Radiator Cap
Meziere Electric Water Pump
AEM Fuel Pressure Regulator
Titan Motorsports Catch Can
Greddy Timing Belt
Aeroquip line and fittings for fuel and brake lines
B&M Powerglide Transmission
B&M Torque Converter
TRD LSD Automatic Rear
VP Racing Fuels C16

This car runs 8.90's, and that is a long way from low 8's... also notice it is running a PowerGlide, and not a 6-speed. Supra's are known for impressive horsepower, not great ET's.

This is the fastest 6-speed I found on their site:

For every one 11 second Supra you show me, I can probably show you 100 Mustangs with the 302 you see as overdone that will match it. I understand wanting to do something different, but there is a reason they are so popular. I have seen 302 Explorer engines bought for $400, install a $30 cam used from a Mustang, $130 valvesprings, then $50 for head gaskets and you have an engine ready for a turbo and 10 second ET's. Do your own work, and you have an engine for less than $750 that will put you in the 10's in a good chassis, or low 11's in a heavier street car. Another great swap would have been a 2003-2004 Cobra engine. They have been known to make 1,000hp on stock internals with an upgraded power adder, just like the Supra. Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords Magazine took the Cobra crate engine, added a small set of cams and a turbo kit, and made 990hp like there was nothing to it. As far as stock block speed, this is Aeromotive's Mustang with a stock block, crank, and heads:

That's a street driven car. Boost Logic is here in Austin, Chris is a friend of mine, he drives the car out to cruise nights. They went 174 mph with it this past Sunday at the SupraNationals.

Whatever, I'm not here to argue with any of you guys. Life's too short for that crap.

I'm just posting updates on the Maverick for those that are interested, hopefully those that will enjoy the build.

Here is what Boost Logic says about the car:

• Boost Logic Ultimate 3.4L Stroker Motor(off the shelf)
• Boost Logic Ultimate 93-98 Race Head +1mm Oversize Valves(off the shelf)
• Boost Logic T6 Turbo Kit w/ GT55 91mm Turbo(off the shelf)
• Boost Logic T6 Front Mount Intercooler
• AEM ECU
• Tilton Quad Plate Clutch
• TRD Rear End
• 3600 lbs
• Working AC/PS/Stereo!!
That's high 8's, not low 8's, and that is a built stroker motor and a car that the entire driveline has been out for work. As I said, I have a lot of respect for Supra's, but they are often over-hyped by fanbois. As far as built turbo engines in Mustangs, and driven on the street, here you go :D :

Here's a Modular engine as I was speaking of, total street car:

Quote from this car:

851 RWHP Twin Turbo 2004 Cobra built and tuned by www.precision-autospots.com. Car is daily driven.

Owner reports getting 25 MPG still on the highway. No new track times and owner has no plans to take back to the track. After all, this is his beater ;)

2-24-08 // Car now makes over 925 RWHP on pump gas. Owner called Precision the other day to say he handed a ZX-14 its ass from a roll. And it was only set to about 850 rwhp he said. Amazing car!

Lance, Thanks for the updates on the car. I can't wait to see it roll through Springfield. It's coming together nicely!

Cody, Remember Spectre only picked the finalist, voters picked the winner. So if Spectre wouldn't have liked the design idea they wouldn't have picked him for the finalist. I say so-what if the design parameters change, they always do.

It's a "dare-to-be-different" build for sure. That type of horsepower with that fuel economy. It'll be an great addition to the Maverick community.

Thanks Luke, looking forward to meeting you there. This build is anything but easy. The oil pan needs to be modded to clear the cross member, there's no room for a decent size intercooler up front, so we will have to go with 2 smaller ones piped in series, and the shock towers definitely had to be removed. I'll have more pictures after the weekend.
