Hello, I have done a t5 swap with my ford 302 but once I put the starter In it made an awful sound. Took it out looked fine. But horrible sound when trying to start it. I am fairly sure I have the correct starter but could be wrong. I am using a 157tooth flywheel and the tranny bell housing is for a 93 Mustang 5.0. I took a photo of the flywheel to check the where pattern and this is what it looks like. Any suggestions would be awsome

What's the starter for? Pict of snout?

Early stick starters are different from late and automatics....

The bell housing number is E6ZR-6394-AA. Which is meant for a 1986-1993 302 t5. I’ve tried to do as much research as I can but can’t seem to figure it out. The bottom pic shows the wear patter so I know it’s engaging because the motor turns. I bought the starter on the right and now tried the starter on the left and does the same thing.

Small block, std trans starters of early/mid '60s were different than automatic. Yours appears to be correct.

I've heard lots worse sounding starters, it is cranking over?

    What flywheel are you using?

I’m using the pioneer fw-163 28oz flywheel, it is 157teeth. The bell housing was meant for these 157 tooth flywheel.

The motor is cranking over it just makes that sound.

Part of me thinks it could also be the block plate vibrating some because the bottom bolts holding the bottom of the shield were loose.

Also, we tried pushing the car in 3rd just to see if anything was catching and it seems like maybe the starter is still engaged with the flywheel because if you push the car it won’t make any sound but then if you turn it over and then push it after it makes this sound like something is still connected.

To me it looks like There is a lot of meshing going on with the bendix and flywheel, would shimming it out help this issue?

Dunno, maybe... You need to verify the engaging of starter drive, too deep or too shallow can give issues.

I've used starters like yours & the later PMGR starters on stick & automatics with 157 & 164 tooth without issue. Even used a three bolt 390 starter on a 351.

Also difference between the 164 and 157 tooth starter on the length of the snout. You notice how your 157 tooth flywheel has the ring gear towards the rear of the flywheel. The 164th one is closer to the front. Hence as Krazy said 2 different starters. I believe the 164 tooth manual and auto starters were the same shorter snout. - Matt
