So, I may have found a Maverick to buy for only $500. However, the description says "bad sub frame". I am trying to contact the seller to see what that means exactly. My question is, what exactly is the sub frame and where is it located? This will help me decide if I can repair it myself (I can weld). Thanks for any help.
Sub frame is the frame rails where they connect/mate w/ the floor pan . I wud suggest you get some pic of what the seller is calling "bad sub frame. It may be beyond reasonable repair and better to look elsewhere.
The subframe is the structural part of your car. It's under the car and there is a front and a rear. Mavericks do not have a separate frame, as they are a unitized body construction.
Finally got a hold of the seller. One front shock tower is just about gone, sub frame on the driver side would beyond my ability fix it without another sub frame from a parts car. I'm going to pass on this one.
Keep looking !! There are Mavericks and Comets out there that won't require extensive metal work such as you've encountered .. Take a mat and look UNDERNEATH the cars and perform the Water on Windshield test before you fork out $$$ for ANY Maverick or Comet you come across. Cometized (Chip)
These cars are sometimes problematic as the Cowl Area "Vent Slats "allows water and miscellaneous debris to collect at the base of the area directly beneath the vented area and over time , debris will prevent water from evacuating this critical area and rust and rot ensue . Pouring water over the windshield area will determine if the vehicle has sustained damage to this area by examining the UNDERSIDE of the dash as water is introduced over windshield area , and cowl area . If water enters into the car it will eventually rot out the floors of the vehicle. Have a friend pour a gallon or more of water and when its being done , get a flashlight and inspect the area UNDER the dash for leaks . Hope this helps. Cometized (Chip)
