Fordsforever is right - you have an SROD, not the toploader imposter. You have to find the shifter parts for the SROD nothing else fits and there are no "after market" shifters - just repair parts. Listen to Fordsforever - he has good input on this.
There are no aftermarket shfters for the SROD. There are rebuild kits on ebay for them though. Or there was a few months ago.
I was in the middle of posting some more info on the SROD but lost it when I was trying to post some pics. Try 5speeds.com 561-743-5600. Talk to Paul as he can help you with what you need. You have to specify car or truck version for the correct kit. He does have some parts but may not have everything. I have some other sources if anyone needs that info. There are no aftermarket shifters for the SROD. only the ford originals. That's because the shifter is mounted to the shift 'turret'. There are 2 versions of the SROD. Mustang and other car versions. And the truck/Bronco version. The truck version has larger mainshaft bearings and the shifter is located at farthest forward location next to the tailhousing. The mustang version was further back about midway. The 'fake' or 'psuedo' OD units were cast and had outside shifters and linkage similar to the old toploader. Was only used in 77 and 78. And was replaced by the SROD with the 79.model. It may use the same rebuild kit as the car version SROD but I don't know much about them. The kit I installed had all the parts except the seal on the main shifter rod where it comes out of the main case to the turret. I had to fab that part. Didn't ask but Paul may have that part as a seperate item. There is a nylon bushing on the bottom end of the shifter handle inside the turret. They usually fall apart over time and need to be replaced as the shifter will be real sloppy without it. Mine came in the rebuild kit so make sure they include it. R Here's a Mustang version, a truck/Bronco version. And a drawing of the internal pats for the SROD.
The SROD came out in the 79 model year. There was another truck version with the shifter mounted in the top cover, like the old granny gear 4 speed truck transmissions. The iron OD toploader was carried over into the 80's in trucks.
That's right. When ford introduced the SROD they also built a 2wd all aluminum case version also with the shifter in place of the top cover. It was called the TOD. They also built a 4wd version with a different tailhousing that bolted up to a transfer case. It also had the top shfter. My service manual shows all of these TOD/SROD versions. There also were some versions made for Jeeps though they didn't have the OD gear but did have a top shifter. Don't know anything about the cast version being carried over after 78 though. I thought the TOD/SROD replaced everything. RS
