I need to relocate a temp sensor because of my new E-waterpump install. it needs to go in a radiator hose.... my question..the inlet or outlet hose from the radiator? the one that needs to move is at the end of the top radiator hose in the w-pump in the pic.
Unless you have a T arrangement, never in a radiator hose, must be where coolant is continually circulating. As long as temp isn't controlled by a shut off valve, the inlet to heater core is usually fine.
However you want to view it.. temp sensor goes in hotter output side of engine/waterpump.. or hotter input side of rad. Maziere and others sell an inline hose fitting with sensor bung. Only downside is the need to split and shorten the hose in a straighter section to get the new adapter in place.
You can also use a T-stat housing that's got a sensor bung on it to mount your temp sensor. It won't register anything till the T-stat opens up. But that will also tell you the T-stat is working.
Guys, on my 3.3 there is a bung in the thermostat housing and there is also an idiot light switch in the head by the firewall. I have put the electric fan switch in the thermostat housing which I understand is best. I am debating keeping the idiot light connected and putting an inline (upper radiator hose) water temp sensor adapter in place for a gauge.. Any cons to using the inline adapter? Anyone know what size the upper hose is? 1 1/4" ??? Is the back of the head suitable for a temp sensor or should that be between the thermostat and radiator?
With lack of coolant, a rubber hose won't be anywhere near the actual engine temp. The 5.0 Mustang/T-Bird/LSC etc used formed metal tubing that sensor bung was near the point tubing screwed into manifold.
So I tried to install the coolant temp sensor in the back of the head by the firewall. This was a total fail. The threads are correct size but the sensor probe just falls into the head. I guess this location doesn't have the adequate configuration.
Right? So water temp sensors have a threaded brass part that tightens the sensor into place. See pics. When I tighten this mofo into the head, the threads are right but the dang sensor just slides into the head.
Geez. Ok, I'm looking for one. Feel free to link. I'm also considering an electric vdo gauge because it has a different style of sensor that doesn't require the flange seat. Honestly tho, is monitoring the temperature at the back of the head a bad idea?
I don't think I'm dealing with AutoMeter brand gauges. They look like some generic 2" gauges from back in the day so hopefully the are the same.
