You're confused? Just be thankful you only have to be around Frank at the FFW in Commerce. Earl, Dan, MAV, and myself aren't too far away from needing a rubber room.slap:
Rick, sounds like a great plan to me. I like the idea of a small block myself. Light means quick, powerful means fast.
Lots of good advice. and I agree with most of it. I REALLY agree with Dan....BB verses SM.....can argue all day. But as you have done in the past and others.....its your ride....do it the way you want. If you want a BB, then do a BB, if you want a SM get a SB. The main realiability issue between the 2 is the fact that the SB tends to stress out easier with a lot of bore, stroke and compression......a stock block....the block you are looking at has a lot more meat and will in turn hold a lot more than a stocker. I think this combo sounds real strong. You are going about it the right way....research, homework and more research. Either way you go, BB or SB its gonna zoom.....and either way you go, BB or SB, both have a chance of grenading at any given moment when you got the pedal down and you are spinning parts at those rpm's. That is part of it. I had my motor built and the price he is given you is a good price. The SVO block alone is around a grand or so(depending on geographics). I am not ashamed to say what I paid for mine. Oil pan to carb water pump to flexplate just a hair under $7,000. If I could go back and do it all over....would I change anything? maybe build a W???? maybe......Maybe spend the extra for a SVO block??? YES. Build a BB???? nope. I would definitely look into the 408.....seems all the outlaw guys around here are running that c.i. with a turbo or Nitrous. Isn't it FUN :bananaman
Busted. I suggested he talk to local racers to find someone in a bind needing to get rid of a motor for less than half that. It's not a hard-find here in Houston at least. Then I figured the money thing wasn't an issue and there'd be lots of follow-up post about everyone's apprehension on buying 'used' so..... I deleted the post. I'll leave this one for you Terry.
The price seems right. Check out what Bennett Racing's small block offerings. Gives you a good idea about what is out there and for how much. http://www.bennettracing.com/crate.html

If "we" take up a collection, how will "we" all share the engine? Will "we" all be sponsors of a race team (nothing to gain) or will "we" be co-owners (slight possibility of gain) or will "we" just be the recepient of Ray's most heartfelt gratitude?
Ok..after talking with the engine builder there is no way to get peak HP in the 6000 rpm range the way it's setup right now. So it's gonna be stroked out to a 408 if he can find a crank worthy of the rest of the motor that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Terry FYI he did mention something about the journals being too small and addressing that problem. I was wrong about the rods being aluminum, forged steel 5340 h beams are whats in it. So as I post this he's trying to track down another billet crankshaft that i wont have to take a second mortgage out to pay for. One thing he did say if this build is stroked out to a 408 I can kiss 700's hp goodbye it will easily be in the 800's, I told him he was breaking my heart. I looked at the Bennett engines a month ago. They have an excellent reputation in this part of the country as a premeire engine builder but the cost is just too far out there for me as it probably is for most of us that do this for fun.
Terry, everyone that contributed will get to sit in the car and make "VROOM VROOM!" noises for one hour. How's that for a deal?
I looked at the 408 option a bit,, maybe the route to go for you. They are doing 427's out of those also I believe. Dan
Rick, not often, but every once in a while, I actually know something.bananaman Ray, What's the minimum contribution to get three VROOMS?
I see used NASCAR stuff under the hoods of 10.5 outlaw and quick 8 cars around here. Not sure what your intentions are but for many of the local 700HP + drag "street cars" I see the Yates heads for the flow but stroke to 410 or bigger displacement, with a much smaller solid roller cam for a 500-600HP motor with multistep nitrous (like a 125HP hit at launch with a delay to a 250HP + hit about 200 feet out) pulling about 7000 RPM. See very few dry sumps...I don't know why....??? Cleaver
Terry- The minimum contribution will depend on the number of contributors. Currently it's at $47,473.00
If your using a dry sump system the block has to be machined for it according to the builder, I don't know if all busch series cars use dry sump or not, this one did. He was able to find a crank(billet) to take it out to 408 ci and not charge me anymore than the original quote. So it looks like this is the way Im gonna go. He's guarateeing well over 800 hp on the dyno now....we shall see. I should have the exact specs on a contract by Monday, i'll post them when I get em.
