Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, a vacuum leak may be why you have to keep your foot on the gas. Check all your vacuum lines for dry rotting. As for timing I usually set it by ear cause you cant trust an old balancer, turn it up til it just starts to ping then back it off til it stops. What part of VA you from?
