I am wondering what size tire to run on my 18x8 wheels for the rear? On the front I have 17x8 with a 245/40/17 tire. I want either a 275/35/18 or a 265/35/18. I've done research and some people say a 275 is too wide for an 8" wheel and others say it is fine. Is this true or not?

    Thanks

Never put a tire on a rim width that is not recommended by the tire manufacturer. It's even more critical with short sidewalls like what you're talking about.

Frank, keep in mind that a 35 or 40 series will have a much shorter sidewall than a 60 series, and the wheel recommendations I've seen call for a wider wheel with those lower profile tires.

exactly right. You can balloon the sidewalls out on bigger 60 series tires much moreso than a 35 series tire. A 275 in this smaller aspect ratio will typically call for at LEAST a 9" wide rim.

a friend had 275x60x15 on 10" and they ballooned. when I went to get my tires he suggested 8s. my 275x60x15 on 8s stood taller with no ballooning. on the shorter sidewall tires...35/45 series I would think the rim should match the tread width.

yep.. and a quick search shows the other end of the spectrum. 315's mounted on stock width rims.

Highly doubtful that either end of the spectrum would allow the sidewall to do its job and carry the same load it was rated for in the first place. I'd have a white knuckled death grip on the steering wheel at anything over 80. lol
