You have a fuel problem. Do you still have your 1974 fuel tank? If so it's more then likely rusty on the inside. Check your filter!! It seems that after a long hard burn out when your pump is working very hard that you might be getting some rust picked up from your tank. Newer unleaded fuel is nowhere near as nice to every mechanical part of a car as leaded fuel was, now we have to deal with all the down falls on cars that were made for lead. If you find any rust it would be time to take apart your carb and clean it out too, rust is a killer. Unless you are using tires that are made for burn outs don't do them, as stated before dry hop would be best and then just real quick. Most people don't even know that they have rust in their tank if they just do street driving until it gets real bad. As aways just my .02 Terry Gates AKA Bossmav
One of the first things I did when I got this car was drop the tank. It had been filled with half-tank for about 10-15 years. I filled it with 20 lbs of fish tank rocks, and shook the crap out of it (literally). This knocked all the big flakes of rust off, then I bought a 2-part epoxy kit. Part 1 "etched" the tank, like "naval jelly", it combined with the surface rust and turned it into a primer. Part 2 was an epoxy that lined the tank with a thin layer to prevent rust from forming again, plus it glued all the remaining chunks to the sides and covered them with epoxy. Since then, I have always ran 2 fuel filters, one before the pump and one between the pump and carb. Since my last post on this thread, I have installed a pertronix and Holley Blue 110 gph electric pump, and the two times I drove it (before I broke the ignition switch ) showed no drop in fuel pressures when I gunned it. Also broke loose in all three gears Apparently, that was the bulk of the problem.
hey scott... what electric pump did you get and how much was it,... that could have been our problem all along with the burp..did it clear the throat out? since you and i are pretty close on setups, i like to hear positive results... thanks
Maverick 9611...yes, but decided to do the job right by working on the block when the time is right, rather than messing with the heads for small short term gains. I would rather get my compression from new pistons and shaved deck, and more stroke, etc. st...Holley blue 110gph. Feels like I have fixed the problem, but not tested at the track, due to that ingnition switch/steering column issue.
