    stockhatch sorry it as taken me so long to get back on this subject.

    The oil adds ease to the threads and take up all the area inside the nut or blind hole. This allows the clamping force to be greater, not less.

    One thing I forget to say is when you are torqueing a bold with a nut ALWAYS torque from the nut and not the head of the bolt, this will give a true reading from your wrench.

    No prob, I think I may have misread your first post. You were talking about the effective clamping force of the applied torque once the lubrication of the oil come into play. Kinda confusing. I just look at it like this...Torquing a fastner dry allows more of the effects of friction to interfere with the setting on your torque wrench. Some torque is "lost" through friction and so the fastner is actually stretched less than it would be if the friction were reduced using a lube or oil. Right? :D
