Tonight I installed the big bad Hayden 1679 ...12" x 12" x 3/4". I mounted it sidways and over to the drivers side right against the radiator. After I placed it and before I plumbed it I did some around town errands to test its effect on water temp. there was absolutey no effect to my surprise. I run at 175-180. Got back home and plumbed it up. First I ran a hose from the steel tranny output line to a bucket and started the engine; I pumped out 3-1/2 qts.( I have a real coctail mix of various ATF's... I want to put all Type F in it) I did not cut any of the steel lines. I adapted them so as to have the ability of reconnecting/ bypassing the extra cooler if it or the lines to it fail on a road trip. BTW, what is up with this -6AN crap.. it's called SAE 45 degree flare..in the real world; hardware store stuff. I ran copper 5'16" tube in the end instead of steel because I needed to do some fancy bends. I used the spring bender and did not touch the big regular bender I have. I pre installed all the mounting zip ties in the cooler after holding it against the radiator and looking for clear passage of the mounting zip ties. I used 3" of hose for each of the cooler connections the the tube. Slipping rubber hose over tubing and clamping it is bad...unprofessional. I adapted the copper tube to hose using 5/16" male flare to female 1/8" pipe thread, then a 1/8" pipe male to 3/8" hose barb. The supplied hose clams are too skinny, I used Ideal #6 all stainless...the wide ones. There is not room for double clamping on the cooler.. Tonight I test ran it good... temp tonight outside is 65 ...I ran at 160 earlier today now it's barely 125.... yahoo.!
Nice job Mack! U put 45 deg flares on the steel lines? Nice idea to eliminate some of rubber hose to bypass the aux cooler if necessary. I have quite-a-bit of rubber hose on my setup. Might consider eliminating some.
Thanks! I like hydraulic hose, when it has swivel flare fittings crimped on. We us it on boats for stabilizer units and steering. Very high pressure. The tight bends and sharp sheet metal between the radiator cooler and the front of the radiator is why I went with metal tube.
