Pulled my Maverick out of the garage yesterday and noticed a small puddle of transmission fluid on the ground. Didn't have time to really investigate it and am planning on doing that this weekend. Any common things I should look for or areas to check? I assume the pan gasket is one and iImay replace it anyway. Should iI replace the screws as well? Thanks guys.
sometimes the converter will drain down and it will leak at the rear yoke seal if it has been sitting for a long time.
First-things-first, before you move the car determine the general location of the leak from the trans. based on the location of the puddle on the floor.
Thanks for the advice. It does seem to slowly drip from the pan. The underneath seems wet as well. I haven't gotten a manual yet to be able to better specify parts. But there seems to be a drip from here as well. Also starting to drip oil from the oil pan bolts so I will eventually replace that gasket as well.
If you really want to know the source of a leak, you have to clean everything up first. Big leaks are obvious but the small ones are often hard to find. Sometimes putting baby powder or flour all around the (cleaned) suspect area will quickly pinpoint the source. I have heard there is also some type of spray available that does the same thing.
that's because they are the lowest point the oil can run before it drips, doesn't mean they are leaking. when you drop the pan look for a "plastic lollipop".
Thanks for the help. I looked for O-rings for the shift lever shaft seal but couldn't find them. Any recommendations of who might have them? I didn't see them at Melvins website. Rock Auto has this part as the shift shaft seal. Is this what I'm looking for?
Wow, that's small. I'll have to research that a bit so I don't buy the wrong thing. How many do I need? Just 1?
Doc, there are actually two things you will probably need if the leak is coming from the lever. One is the seal you posted above. You will have to remove the pan in order to get the shift lever out of the case. Then pry out the old seal and carefully hammer in the new one. The o-ring you need is where the kick down lever goes through the center of the shift lever. I have done this twice on 2 different C4's. Both times I ordered the 2 together off ebay. Just as a side note, I also replaced the stock steel pan with an aluminum one. The aluminum pan has a much thicker and rigid lip that prevents it from getting distorted and provides a smooth surface for the gasket, plus it has a drain plug.
Just installed a new aluminum transmission pan on my Comet it holds an extra quart of oil and has a thicker flange also has a drain plug. I could never get the stock pan to stop leaking. Seals good now no leaks.
