    Pre-smog timing gear setup are worth a few more horses. One of the things that Ford did to please the EPA back in the early 70's was to retard the valve timing 7 degrees to score lower numbers on the emissions. This trick hurt the performance but it smelled good enough, at the time, for the EPA.

    They didn't do that on the 302s.

    The change for the 302 was 5/2/72.

    Possibly same time they added EGR?
