I agree with Ray on this one.
I also dont like the idea of the carpet and plywood with regard to fire. Seems like a bad combo with the fuel cell and possible spillage.

You can roll ridges into it to make it stronger.

Interestingly enough the tool isn't a ridge roller, it's a bead roller.

I have found that after you rivet or screw the sheet metal down, the flexibility isn't as much of any issue anymore.

You could also brace it with some small angle iron to make yourself feel better.

Here is a picture of mine, although you don't have a roll bar it would be pretty easy to build a frame out of tubing to hold the cell above the floor.
Plywood/carpet is not the way to go. My Maverick has been around for awhile and has always been fully carpeted on the inside, from the tubs forward....................and after many years of racing when you slide behind the wheel it smells like race gas..............wood would even be worse. Just put down some sheetmetal and rivet it to the floor.

    IMHO

I really wanted it to look clean and match the rest of the car with carpet and all...I guess that ain't gonna happen.

So, would 2 pieces of angle iron across the deep well in the trunk with the angle cut off about 6" each end to be bolted and tack welded to the floor provide enough support for 15 gal cell? Would I need three, approx 1-1/4" wide?

then strap the cell down to the angle iron.

Would I need any sort of insulation, to keep the angle iron from wearing into the aluminum cell material, and likely over the straps as well?

One solution this provides me is that it will hover over the indentation in the floor, allowing the rear sump area of the tank to sit lower without rubbing on anything.

I would like to get this thing in today, if possible. I don't like having the car sit out there without running.

I think I will keep it simple and just use the brackets. Thanks. See you tomorrow, I got that address. :thumbs2:

    Scooper,

Remember that your 15 gallon tank of gas is going to weigh about 125lbs plus the weight of the cell.
Without seeing a picture of the cell I would say to build a rectangle/square and support the cell around the bottom edge, all the way around the perimeter, then put straps over the cell holding it to the frame, then raise the frame on legs at the 4 corners. I would weld pads for the angle iron to sit on, that are secured to the floor of the trunk.
Yes, I would take some rubber hose, cut it in half and put it between the straps and the cell and tighten it down.

    IMHO

I just bought 2" square tubing 11 gauge, pretty heavy stuff, to mount the rear part of the cell. It will lift it up to clear the sump, and it is plenty strong for 15 gallons of fuel.

Then 2"X1/8" angle for the rear, with the angle going down into the indentation in the floor.

Good call on mounting it with pads under the braces. I like that idea.

I have some stuff under my toolbox in the back of my truck that is about 3" wide and about 3/8" thick. It has held up for 7 years on my truck, and I also used it under my radiator in the mav. I am trying to figure out where I got that and use it on the 2" mounting surfaces on the cell. I have no idea where I found that stuff...:hmmm:
