Well I hope I didnt damage anything. I did blow the line out before when the new tank and sending unit was about to be installed. I was having the issue before I did this and just wanted to see if something still might have been clogged. I did hear a loud noise in the tank like something hit the wall, so hopefully my filter on the sending unit didnt fly off.
If the tank held pressure like that, there's your problem. It's not venting, creating a vacuum in the tank after a few minutes running, preventing fuel flow to the carb. Tank needs to be vented.
What is the best way to check the vent or clear it out? I tried attaching a hose to it last night and hooking up my pond water remover that sucks out water and it broke? I then smelled the hose and dont even smell any gas fumes coming out of the line.
I hope you're not using any electrical pump that's not made for flamable liquids to evacuate the fuel tank. You could have a big explosion. If you tank isn't too full, just remove the gas cap and take it for a ride to see if the problem is still there. You'll know if its a venting problem or not.
Its a good thing it broke! I was using an electric pump I only have 10 gallons of gas in the tank so taking the cap off should be fine. I will try that makes it a lot easier. If it is the vent line is there a place to buy a vented gas cap?
Yes, many of the gas caps are vented. You can modify an un-vented one to be vented. Do a search -- Mavaholic described the technique.
Don;t worry, your pond pump was in no danger of exploding. Water and electicity don't work well together either. Just don't try using a vacuum cleaner to evacuate the tank. You WILL have a huge problem then.
I've had two pond pumps that tripped a GFI breaker. I wouldn't trust them for pumping gasoline fumes. Odds are you wouldn't have a problem but if you do it could be a big one.
It was only sucking air anyway no fluids. I was just trying to clear the line. Im guessing it couldnt clear it so it burnt up the motor on the pump. Will take the gas cap off, seems like the easiest thing to do. Now I have an oil leak somewhere after driving it for 30 minutes last time. I opened the hood and there was oil on top of the valve covers, starter and top of the transmission bell housing. Im hoping its just the gasket on the valve covers, replacing the valve covers soon anyway because there cheap ones.
Ok, so it ended up being the carb that was the issue. I bought another carb a tomoco brand carb from Oreilly's that is really a motorcraft 2150. Connected the vacuum advance and replaced all the hose clamps on the car and took it for a spin. I drove the car for about 30 minutes and didnt have any issues at all.
